I stupidly posted this in the Mac Basecamp forum, so will repost here since I found the answer to my problem, perhaps helping others.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SOLVED ... Basecamp Beta 4.0 successfuly transfers routes to my nuvi. I deleted all the routes and favorites on my Nuvi, then deleted the contents of the gpx folder on the Nuvi. I then transferred my set of waypoints and routes ... Voila! ... success. Yay!
It did NOT appear that the Nuvi 'changed' the routes (see rant below), but I will keep an eye out for that by viewing the routes inside the Nuvi using Basecamp by clicking on the route inside the Nuvi and comparing that to the same route on my computer. Hopefully, they will continue to agree. My concern about Trip Planner 'changing' Basecamp-created routes is that I use Google earth to go down to street view to check out road condition, Mountain Directory to check for serious grade hazards, as well as going to the DOT for the state to make sure the road is actually paved etc. I try to do my homework before I get into a jam towing a heavy load through mountainous terrain.
Final note: Basecamp pre-3.3.3 and the firmware version in the Nuvi at that time suffered the same 'no transfer routes' problem. When I upgraded Basecamp to 3.3.3, it worked ok. When garmin.com/dashboard told me I needed to upgrade my firmware, the problem returned. When I installed the Basecamp Beta 4.0, the problem went away. Apparently, you must have the right mix of Basecamp version and firmware version.

My original post follows below
===================
It would certainly be both helpful and informative to have a step by step explanation regarding what should otherwise be a simple task, but for whatever reason, is not. I have a nuvi 2450, and am having the same problem.
Follows is Garmin's explanation and 'instruction', with [MY QUESTIONS IN CAPS IN BRACKETS]. Thanks for any enlightenment.
To access a transferred route in a zumo 350, dezl series, LIVE series, or nuvi 2400, 2405, 2505, 3400, 3500, or 3700 series device:
1.Touch Apps
2.Touch Trip Planner
3.Allow time for the device to automatically import the trip/route
[I ASSUME THAT ONE HAS ATTACHED THE NUVI TO A COMPUTER RUNNING BASECAMP, AND USED 'SEND TO' TO TRANSFER THE ROUTES AND WAYPOINTS. IS THIS THE PROCESS WHERE WE NEED TO 'Allow time for the device to automatically import the trip/route'? OR IS THE DEVICE DISCONNECTED FROM THE COMPUTER, TURNED ON AND ALLOWED TO DO WHATEVER IT IS DOING? ON MY NUVI, THE HOURGLASS JUST GOES ROUND AND ROUND UNTIL THE BATTERY DIES. BY THE WAY, THERE IS NO 'Apps' ON THE NUVI 2450 MENU.
These Trip Planner devices will take several minutes to automatically import trips into the Trip Planner. The import will begin, but no message will appear on the device indicating that the import is happening. Once the import is complete, all transferred routes will be displayed under a category called Unscheduled Trips in the Trip Planner.1 Until the trips show up in Trip Planner, please do not turn off the device or connect it to a computer.
[THIS SEEMS TO INDICATE THAT THE MAGIC HERE IS OCCURING POST BASECAMP TRANSFER.]
*Please note: When routes are imported to your Garmin device, the route may change due to navigation settings within your device.
[DOESN'T THIS RATHER NEGATE THE VALUE OF DOING A ROUTE? DO YOU KNOW HOW DANGEROUS IT IS TO ALLOW THE NUVI TO 'change' A ROUTE THAT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY PLOTTED OUT AND RESEARCHED? FOR EXAMPLE, TRY TO MAKE A ROUTE THROUGH YELLOWSTONE, AND LEFT TO ITS OWN BLACKBOX CALCULATIONS, IT WILL MORE THAN LIKELY 'SUGGEST' TOWING MY 6000 LB LOAD UP A ROAD WITH 8% GRADE AND NO GUARDRAIL. THAT IS CRAZY ... ]
Units that create routes using Trip Planner cannot send routes to MapSource or BaseCamp. However, units that utilize Trip Planner will be able to receive routes from BaseCamp and MapSource.
[PERHAPS. AS I STATED AT THE OUTSET OF THIS POST, WHAT IS REQUIRED ARE STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS. EXAMPLE:
1. CONNECT THE DEVICE TO THE COMPUTER
2. 'SEND TO' THE WAYPOINTS/ROUTES TO THE NUVI. WAIT 6 MONTHS FOR THIS TO OCCUR.
3. DISCONNECT THE NUVI FROM THE COMPUTER AND TURN THE DEVICE ON. WAIT ANOTHER 6 MONTHS.
4. FOLLOW NEW ROUTE CALCULATED AND NOW UNKNOWN TO DRIVER, WATCH AS TRANNY TEMP CLIMBS, BRAKE FAILS, AND ENJOY THE VIEW AS YOU PLUMMET OFF A CLIFF AT A HAIRPIN TURN.
