Dakota 10 creates dangerous hiking routes in field; BaseCamp is OK

I'm using a Dakota 10 with firmware version 5.20 for hiking. I'm having a problem getting it to create routes suitable for pedestrians.

So far, I've posted about this problem in the following places:

  • Dakota WikiSpaces: Create route in the field for hiking
  • GPSReview.net Garmin Handheld Forum: Dakota 10: Creating a route in the field for hiking
  • GPSpassion.com GPS Portables Autonome - Rando Forum: in French, no title, scroll to the bottom of the page

I've also spoken with and written to Garmin Tech Support about this anomaly.

The problem can be summarized as follow: on my Dakota 10, which has been suitably configured for pedestrians and on which is loaded a routable Garmin topo map of NE France, when I create a route in the field, the Dakota invariably directs me to the nearest highway and thence to my destination. The highways it chooses are equivalent to state routes in the U.S. Sidewalks or trimmed shoulders are not present. The routes are dangerous for hikers, though not forbidden for their use. When I return home and use BaseCamp to create the same routes, it invariably chooses trails, streets and small roads between the same two waypoints.

I realize this forum is not for Dakota routing problems, but for BaseCamp problems. I have no problem to report with BaseCamp. I'd just like my Dakota 10 to create routes in the field suitable for hiking.

Would the BaseCamp developers, by any chance, have anything to suggest?

I am afraid I cannot really help you here. We just know very little about device firmware. Talking to Garmin Product Support should be the way to go.

    Andy,

I think this may be related to a few problems I'm having with other Garmin products.

    A couple of suggestions:

Look at your preferences. If you have the option you need to select "off road". Otherwise your GPS will constantly work to get you onto a paved road or sidewalk.

The preference of Shortest or Fastest can drive you nuts. Its constantly trying to take you off the route you planned, be cause it can find something shorter or faster.

The only way I have found around both is to add lots of "vias" or "waypoints" to your route, thus the preferences can't find other ways that meet their criteria, and it sticks to your route.

    Just some thoughts.

    Hi, Rooster,

    Thanks for your reply.

Setup | Routing | Guidance Method is set to On Road For Distance. Setting this to On Road For Time did not affect the route chosen by the Dakota. Setting this to Off Road eliminated routing altogether, which is definitely not what is wanted. (For a definition of Off Road, see ">this post">this post.)

As for adding waypoints to the route in the field, I can't do that because I don't know the route in advance. That's precisely what I'm asking the Garmin to do -- define the route.

    regards, Andy
