Join tracks in the middle?

Is there any way to join tracks other than at the ends? I've been trying to build hiking trails in some park areas and I end up with many separate tracks. Think of something like a tree arrangement. Many roots shooting out from a central point. I'd like to join them into a single track for easier management but BaseCamp insists in trying to create a single continuous trail and adds connection tracks from the end of the trail to the next trail.

Or is this just not the right tool or methodology for what I want to do?
  • Can't think of anyway to do what you want ... a route or track normally has a start and an end, and that's what BC does ...

I know it's possible in MapSource as I've done it via copy'n'paste but I'm not sure if BaseCamp allows that.

With MapSource I open two (or more) instances of the program, open the track properties and then copy/paste track points into another instance. This can result in tracks with out-of-order/meaningless timestamp information but if that doesn't bother you then have at it :)

PS: In case you don't know MapSource is the predecessor to BaseCamp. You can get it here.

This is on thing I'm really liking about my Rino 655t GPS/radio. It allows me to save a track at any point. Thus, if I plan an off road route from A to B, clear the track at the start. Then if in the middle somewhere we find a side trail we'd like to check out. I save the route, clear it, then do the sidetrail, save it and clear it. Then do the rest of the original route, save the track. And then download all if them to BaseCamp. Thus I can join the routes I want, convert them to route for the future, etc.

This is one functionality I sure wish my Zumo 665 had. So now I have the Zumo on the dash for the large screen, and have the Rino 655t clipped to my shoulder harness.

Sometimes my Zumo will have several track sections for a days ride. But to save me, I cannot figure out what causes the track to stop and start again. Is it powering off? Nope Is it stopping for some given amount of time? Not that I can determine. I dunno, but I sure wish I did!!!

JohnCNA, You could save the Track as you want--let give you an example:
Clear Current Track and start hiking at Pt A, hike to Pt B on Trail 1. you come to Trail 2 which goes off to the top of the hill. If you clear your GPSr now, you'll have to Join Tracks in BC, but you could save it.
So now from Pt B your hiking on Trail 2 to the top of the hill---Pt C. you leave the top and return down to Pt B, and continue hiking on Trail 1. You have 1 continuous Track.

You can keep doing the same thing for other off shoots, and these will show up as 1 long trail. It may not be what you want--but there is a way to do it.

IF you have saved individual Trails, and you have out & backs with those side trails, you could do an Advanced/Join Tracks in BC. Just make sure you keep the direction of the trail correct. IOW, If you were going to Join the Pt A-PtB hike with the Pt B-Pt C and back to Pt B, make sure you select the right order in the Join window, otherwise you'll have funny lines all over the place.

If you have individual Tracks you've saved, you'll have to Cut the track at the point the offshoot trail starts, and then perhaps hand draw in the return track to the direction of all the tracks is continuous.

As sussamb mentioned--Your track can only have 1 start and 1 end.
