More Duplicating Waypoints

There have been many posts relating to the duplication of waypoints, but it seems to me they mostly relate to points imported from MapSource. This post is to ask about curious duplication of waypoints entirely from within BaseCamp. This is from using 3.3.3, I am not inclined to jump into 4.0.5 beta until it is deemed ready for production, perhaps someone could kindly check for this behavior there?

Very simply -- create two new waypoints A and B within BC, then create a simple route from A to B. Then say you want to create a return route from B to A. Using the "duplicate" function, select the A to B route and create a duplicate route of it, then simply invert it. But I see that the act of duplicating the first route created two totally new waypoints, A1 and B1, on top of the original ones, and the second route uses ony the two new waypoints.

Am I missing some reason for this behavior? MapSource never did this, my list of waypoints was stable and just as I created them, no matter how often I used them in routes or how the routes were created. The way BC seems to work, the number of waypoints could be expanding for no good reason, with many being duplicates. I view this as a bug and suggest it be changed to behave the way MS worked please.

Thanks.

BaseCamp 4.0 (not the 4.0.0.5 Beta, but the final release) will prompt you when you duplicate a route if you want to duplicate the waypoints or not.

That would be nice. I assume it will delete only those waypoints in the route that are not also used in other routes? i.e., only the unique content?

But I'm still wondering why BC creates new duplicate waypoints at all in the case I cited? I can't come up with any reason, and it seems to me a really bad practice, data management wise.

That's what users asked for. They wanted a real duplicate of their route, where changing the waypoint in one route wouldn't affect the other route. With 4.0 users can choose what they want.
  • Well, yeah, MS did that on the device, under the right circumstances. I found it annoying. It cropped up if I already had my original start and destination waypoints on the device and then created a route with several more vias in between. Export from MS and you get the option to export all or none of the waypoints with the route. So if I wanted my new intermediate waypoints to transfer, I ended up with duplicate source and destinations because it was an all or nothing option.
