Global Map Vs. City Navigation

Hello to everybody, newbie here. I've just purchased the new Zumo 350 LM hence just downloaded the BC software and, to date, I can't understand why the following scenario happens:
- If the device is not connected to the PC the only map I get is the completely unusable Global Map (better to place an AD there, at least it'll make money:rolleyes:
- If I try with "Garmin Lifetime Updater" the answer is that there're no new maps to be installed BUT I can force a new installation also for the PC.:rolleyes:
- If I try with a new installation I always get the message "Garmin servers are busy, try later".:rolleyes:
Maybe I'm missing the point but, please tell me how I can obtain a decent map for BC without being forced to have the Zumo ALWAYS with me.:eek:

I've downloaded mine onto a flash drive, that fools Basecamp and it reads the map directly off that. Also acts as a back up should I need to reload any files as I simply copied the full directory structure and files onto the flash drive :)

I would download the maps again, but this time save it to the PC (use the options button to use this function.)

What probably happened is you do not have the maps installed on the PC, hence it cannot find them.

That's a sensible option IF a map update is available but it might not be yet, in which case it can't be 'downloaded again'. Then the only way of viewing the maps that came with the GPS is to have it plugged in or copy it in the way I described.

...this makes sense. My question is why this simple, basic info is NOT written ANYWHERE? I can easily find information on how BC behaves under solar tempest conditions BUT nothing concerning the map? :confused:

P.S. To the Garmin team: why I get a "Server busy Error" while the reason is "nothing to download even if already paid"?

I guess the obvious answer is "when they're not busy" :)

Seriously though I've never seen that message. Maybe they've just released a map update (there's not one for City Navigator North America) and the servers are getting hammered.
