Basecamp data file

Where does Basecamp keep my data (all of my tracks, routes, waypoints, etc)? And would it be possible to keep that file in my DropBox so that I can access the same set of data from more than one PC?

For example, when I go on an extended trip and I am doing lots of hiking, off-roading, and exploring, I usually clean-up, rename, and file my tracks and waypoints each evening on my laptop. But when I am at home I mainly use my desktop computer and trying to keep the two sets of data in-sync is a bit challenging.

    Greg,

Not sure I understand all your questions...like what is a Dropbox?

But, everything you download from your gps to basecamp goes into the My Collection folder...and stays there unless you go in and delete it.

You then create new folders and lists to separate datat the way you want it. A bit like you, I go offroading in my Polaris RZR and at the end of the day I'm at my laptop downloading tracks, waypoints and pictures for the day. Yup, I've got my Zumo 665 on the dash and my Rino 655t clipped to my seatbelt harness.

I will generate a folder for the trip. For instance I was in Taylor Park Colorado for two weeks in July. Thus there is a folder called "Taylor Park 2012" and then lists for each day of the stay. I named the Lists by the destination or trail.

You can export your data to .gpx files. That way you can keep the data outside of basecamp, and then reimport as you like.

Yup, I've only been using basecamp for a couple of months and "My Collection" is getting very large and difficult to find things and my folder list is getting large and difficult to manage.

So I think it just takes a bit of time and experience with basecamp to learn it...it has me, but I'm beginning to like it a lot.

  • DropBox will work fine for your purposes. You can use the free version for up to 2 GB of storage. If you need more than that, you can either pay for the pro version, or go with a different service, such as SkyDrive. Also works great for backing up critical data that needs to be stored off site. Just in case the asteroid hits.
