Mapsource Obsolete?

Trying again. Updated my nuvi 855 and noticed Base Camp has been installed on my computer. I have been moving everything to a new Win 7 machine from a dying XP computer. Guessing trying to update my nuvi resulted in the download/installation. I know nothing about Base Camp. Will this replace my installed version of Mapsource? Will in work with my Garmin 60 CSX? Thanks for the help.

  • I run both Mapsource and Basecamp with no problems and AFAIK Basecamp will work with your 60.

MapSource (6.16.3) works fine on my Win7 64-bit system. It'll also work with your 60CSx. Just be sure to install the latest USB drivers.

Yes MapSource is obsolete but you can continue to use it until/if you switch to BaseCamp.

PS: You can download/install the MapSource update if you already have BaseCamp installed.

In my humble (ha!) opinion, MapSource is not obsolete...

Well it is obsolete in the fact that Garmin no longer supports it and that 6.16.3 is the last version.

That said, and I've stated it often here, I agree with your other sentiments. I use MapSource with my 3 units (76CSx, Oregon 450 and nuvi 1490T) and import GDB files into BaseCamp. I find BaseCamp painful to use for transferring/manipulating data so I use it as a viewer.

To me it was such a shame that they "abandoned" Mapsource... it was IMHO, 95% there,,, Like "throwing the baby out with the bath water"...

I like some of the ideas behind BaseCamp but in reality I use it for just a few things: re-indexing older route via-points to newer mapsets (nice) and I find it easier than Mapsource for "combining routes"... but other than that.. NADA. Mapsource is what I use to create routes...

I gave a seminar to my BMW club on Mapsource recently and talked about BC as questions did arise about it.... but as was said, to me it is still a "work-in-progress"...
