Transferring waypoints and routes to Nuvi2595

I have a bunch of waypoints in BC, and a new Nuvi, and am confused.

I created a new list in BC called 'For Nuvi' and did "send to" on the routes and way points I wanted to send to it.... In "My Collection" I have lists based on area: Austin, DFW, Houston etc. I tried to create similar names under "For Nuvi" but had to give slightly different names, so I did "DFW-Nuvi", etc.

Then, I right clicked on For Nuvi folder and did a SendTo the nuvi device. When I look on the device itself, it has a bunch of other categories like "DFW" (which is not in the "ForNuvi" folder) and "DFW-Nuvi" (which is).

I've tried deleting all saved places on the Nuvi several times, but these funky extra categories come in. What am I doing wrong?

Oh yeah, and I cannot find the routes and tracks I transferred from BC on the device either.
  • The reason you had to give them different names in BC is that no list can have the same name as another list.

You can't import tracks into a nuvi, just routes IF it's capable of reading routes. Your nuvi has a new feature called 'trip planner' which works slightly differently to routes. However I understand that BC will send 'trips' to a nuvi that uses trips and they should display, although there are instances on other forums where this doesn't seem to work too well

You also can't use BC to delete stuff off a nuvi, you have to do it on the device itself.

Yeah, the duplicate-names issue was a shocker... I mean, in my "IT" mind, '/MyCollection/DFW' is not a duplicate name of '/MyCollection/Nuvi/DFW'.

I wish I could figure out how to make 'routes' appear in 'trip planner'.

I think I may have gotten to the bottom of why there are both"Group" and "Group-Nuvi" listed in saved places: If a waypoint in BC exists in more than one list, when it is transferred to Nuvi, the device will create a group for each list it appeared in. So, for example, I have a waypoint "00_HOME" in BC that I drop into a lot of different lists for planning purposes (and allowing me to install topic-specific lists on my eTrex, and always have HOME there). If I transfer "00_HOME" to the Nuvi, it gets there, but in the process the device creates groups for just about any road-trip I have planned: driving to Houston, or Austin or that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Camp Perry Ohio.... containing only that one point: "00_HOME". Assuming my understanding is correct, that's just sheer silliness!
  • Ah yes, sorry didn't cover that point, waypoints sent that are in more than one list (which equals a category on the nuvi) will appear in all those categories on the nuvi (and if they're not there they will be created). It's designed that way, and while you clearly think it's silly others will want it to work that way :)

Incidentally you will see that when BC sends waypoints to your nuvi it does so by sending a *.gpx file to the GPX folder. That file is then merged into the 'favorites' already on your nuvi when you reboot. The trick is to then delete that *.gpx file, since if you don't you'll never be able to delete any of the waypoints you've sent off the nuvi should you wish to.

You might also want to look at this Garmin FAQ:

Seems it can take a while for a 'trip' to be imported, maybe you just need to wait a while

Thanks for the tips! Yeah, I pared it down to one simple "route" for a property line... did not turn out so well, but it did finally appear there.

I saw three gpx files in that GPX folder. Current, Temp and another one that isnt there any more; "position.gpx" perhaps? Anyway, I assume I can safely remove those after the device has booted and "imported" their contents?

For keeping the list names from getting created on the device, would you suggest I DUPLICATE all waypoints into the nuvi-specific lists (and a "1" appended to each so there are no duplicate names)? Or try to manage separate databases using backup/restore? Or just decide that my Laptop will be the Nuvi master and the desktop the eTrex master?

And one more question: What file should I remove to get rid of a third-party map I installed using MapInstall which I do not want taking up space?
  • Yes, once the waypoints/favorites have been imported you can delete all the *.gpx from the GPX folder.

As for how you manage waypoints etc, any of the 3 you suggest would work, so whichever workflow works best for you.

As for deleting a map you've installed that you no longer want, that depends on what's installed on your nuvi and how it got there, but assuming you've only used Mapinstall and only installed one map since you bought the nuvi then the map should be named gmapsupp.img, there may also be other gmapsupp.* files such as gmapsupp.unl, they too can be deleted. Note deleting the wrong files can make your nuvi into a brick, so be careful ... the name must start with gmapsupp ... ;)

It would also be worth backing up the files first just in case ...

Yeah, I remember gmapsupp.img from my eTrex, but none is to be found on the Nuvi...

Instead, under a directory called "Map" are two img files:
txtopo11 (which matches the name of the map I installed but dont want), 391MB
City Navigator North America NT 2013.1.img which is only 85 MB

Why is the "installed" City Nav map so much smaller?
And I guess the txtopo11.img is the file I should ditch.

MapInstall 4.0 doesn't write gmapsupp.img anymore if the device understands "nMap" (which means supp files that can have any name *.img).

You should be able to delete txtopo11.img manually, or you can use MapInstall 4.0 to delete it. I assume "City Navigator North America NT 2013.1.img" is just a partial image of just a few CN NA NT tiles.
