Migrating to 2595-LMT from eTrex

OK, I realize this is rather device specific, but there aren't any appropriate sub-forums for that, and I do use basecamp.... hoping someone can help get me up to speed on the deltas between these two devices.

My 2nd ever garmin device arrives today. Its a Nuvi 2595-LMT. I figure I'll relegate the eTrex to off-road use only (no need for road routing any more), and the 2595 will be my dedicated truck/auto device.

So, about me and GPS:
On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being expert) I think I'm about an 8 on the eTrex and 7 on Basecamp, 9 on GoogleEarth. I've futzed around with OSM and GPSFileDepot maps on the eTrex. I've got a bunch of POIs on it (via POI loader) from poi-factory.com and gps-data-team.com on a pretty big sd-card in the eTrex. I keep at least a dozen "favorite" waypoints on it, as well as a couple common routes. I usually run the device with active tracking enabled. Managing all of this data on the eTrex has been a PITA, and some things I rarely update (though they need it) because of the hassle.

So, what do I need to be mindful of when bringing this new 2595 into my "network" with Basecamp to co-exist with the eTrex? What are some subtle key differences in these two devices that are not readily apparent or obvious (e.g. what might I miss that the Nuvi can do because I've been hamstrung by the eTrex, or, how might the Nuvi behave radically different "behind the scenes"?). Should I put my most-used waypoints and routes on the Nuvi? Should I NOT?

I'm excited about my new device, but I'm worried I'll muck it up or miss out on some neat tricks because I've been 'eTrexed' for so long! I figure I'll have to change my mindset a bit when working on the Nuvi (and probably how I think of the eTrex too).

:)
  • It's not an option under Save but under Edit. Select a favorite then tap where it says 'Press for more' then 'Edit'. That should show an option to 'Change Map Symbol' :)

You'll then see which symbols your nuvi can cope with.

I installed a Topo from GPS-file-Depot and it doesnt show anything useful, unless I turn off the routable CN map - bleh.

This would be the same on any Garmin GPS. Each map has a draw priority from 0 to 31 assigned to it. Higher priority maps cover and hide low priority maps. City Navigator has a priority of 30, so unless the topo map has a priority of 31, it will be hidden by City Navigator.

Personally, I make topo maps with a priority of 31 so it can be viewed on the screen while City Navigator is also active to provide routing, POI search, speed limits and lane assist. Very few other authors at GPSFileDepot do this, but there are a couple.

A draw priority of 31 is also used for transparent overlay maps. These maps have no background, so you can see the City Navigator map through them. The "MyTrails" map at GPSFileDepot is a popular map that uses this technique.

I've done the same with a topo map on my nuvi, it's a neat trick which as you say allows you to view the topo map while using the features of City Navigator ;)
