Clearing Favorites

I recently purchased a nuvi 50 for an upcoming trip because I'd read that these devices support .gpx files. After attempting to create a custom route in BaseCamp and manually copying the .gpx file to the device, I spent some time searching here and learned that the nuvi line does not support custom routes. So I'm wanting to return it to the store because it's no more functional than the device I already own. Unfortunately when I reset the device by powering on while touching the lower left corner of the screen, none of the favorites are removed. Is there another way to reset it so these are removed?

On a side note, I noticed when using BaseCamp 3.3.3, that when I attempted to draw a custom route the 'recalculate' function wouldnt route over highways, even though the selected action was 'Automotive'. Did I miss something?

On the device or in BaseCamp?

Not seeing 'Tools' on the device anywhere, and I don't think i'll be able to get BaseCamp to 'see' the device because I'm running windows in a virtual on linux.
  • According to this, you should be pressing the lower right corner of the screen...How do I perform a master reset on my nuvi 30, 40, or 50 series device?

Apologies, seems this is such a basic GPS that Garmin have dropped the tools button and the options within it. Page 22 of the manual though explains how to clear all user saved data, but you've tried that and so not sure why your favorites are remaining. Did you by any chance transfer them from a previous unit? If so search on your GPS for any files ending in .gpx and delete them first, then retry clearing user saved data.

Not sure the reset was accomplished, since the user stated they pressed the lower left, but the directions state lower right corner of the screen.

To perform a master reset on nuvi 30, 40, and 50 series devices:

Note: A master reset will erase all favorites1 and will restore your device to the default factory settings. If you would like to back up your favorites to your computer, you can find instructions to do so here.

    • Start with the device OFF and unplugged from power
    • Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
    • Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the device ON
    • Release the power button when the device powers ON
    • You will see a new message: "Erase all user data?"
    • Remove your finger from the touch screen when this message displays
    • Touch Yes
If text language is not in English, this is the button on the right
The device will now reset. Follow the on-screen prompts and then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

1Although the master reset will erase all saved favorites, any loaded custom points of interest will remain intact on the device.
  • True ... but clearly it didn't work, so it could be a number of reasons ... let's hope the OP reports back
  • Think you may be confusing a master reset and an erase of user data ... page 22 of the manual says the latter is accomplished by pressing lower left ... course Garmin could have it wrong

You might be right. :o Of course the master reset will fix the issue. Since user is returning it to the store, wiping everything would be my preference.
  • I might be wrong :(

I've just looked at the manual again and it says right, now earlier I swear the one I looked at said left

Either way, between us I think we've covered it :)

Thanks for all the responses. As I imagine you've surmised I was on vacation last week, and the last thing I want to do on vacation is sit in front of my laptop - I get plenty of that while on the clock.

My apologies for the "lower left" in the original post, I meant "lower right".

Just a few hours before I'd planned to leave I finally I figured out how to bend the machine to my will. I would prefer to figure out how to clear this data as it completely clutters up 'Favorites' - the only feature in the device's software I've found to be useful. If I can I may keep it. I can only hope there are hidden menus available for this and other purposes.

It's evident that this unit (and apparently the entire nuvi line) is dumbed down to the point of being just slightly more functional than a toy. It's unfortunate, because I'd heard many good things about Garmin's products and was hoping to be suprised by a technology product that's actually friendly to technophiles while also being priced fairly. However, after spending hours trying to massage the raw .gpx xml, I then wasted many more hours in the horrifically unintuitive BaseCamp creating a track that I later learned was not supported by my unit. Shame on me for not researching thoroughly before purchase. But shame on you Garmin for thusly hobbling your device's software.

My solution was to use google earth to locate waypoints in the middle of the route segments (i.e. actual short-cuts) I wanted to take that the routing software would never choose, converting them to .gpx, manually editing the xml and then selecting those waypoints along the trip. The goal was to make the GPS tell my less experienced drivers exactly what to do during their shift of the 14 hour trip without the need to wake up dad. Thankfully this method kept the number of navigator wake-ups to a minimum. But it could, and should be easier.
