What is new in BaseCamp 4.0?

The current 4.0 version is the 4.0.0.4 Beta. You can download it at http://developer.garmin.com/apps/BC/BaseCamp_4.0.0.0_Beta.exe.

Lots of things have changed in BaseCamp 4.0. It's sometimes hard to know what one bullet point in the change list means, which is why I am breaking down some of the changes and try to illustrate it with some screenshot, when appropriate.

New Features

Garmin Adventures!

Basestation Mode for Astro and Rino

You can now connect your compatible device to BaseCamp and see your position live on the big screen in BaseCamp. You can also see where your dogs (Astro, Alpha) or buddies (Rino) are. Firmware updates for Rino 6xx and
Astro 320 should now be available.

You can now plan your trip better than ever by adding departure, layover and arrival times.

Right-clicking on the map with the hand or pointer tool selected will now give you options.
  • Hi FALAGAR

Thanks for the feed back, it's good to know you guys are working out the bugs.

I just found one more-- When using the PAN (hand) tool the highlighted route un-highlights every time I try to pain the map.

Toggling between properties window and map

Two requests: First fix the property window disappearing on some functions but not others. Preferred option is the properties window remains open unless user turns it off. Example:

    1. Double click on route and properties window appears (in separate window for me - not on top of map)

    2. Click the insert, zoom, erase functions (not sure about all of them) the properties window remains open. THIS IS THE PREFERRED OPTION.

    3. However, click the select, pan functions and the properties windows disappears. Its frustrating as have to remember which ones will make it disappear and which ones will not.

Second request is that the properties window not automatically reset to the top to modifications in the route. Case in point: I have some routes with more shaping points than can be seen in the properties window without scrolling down. If I scroll down and highlight a shaping point then go to the map window and perform a function (e.g. add another shaping point near the one I was looking at), the properties window will reset to the top. I then have to scroll all the way down and find the last place. When there are just a few shaping points its not a problem. When there are 20+ shaping points this becomes a real pain trying to remember and then find your last position.

No White pop up square when I am on a intersection using the MOVE POINT command

One of my biggest problems wiht BC using the Move Point command is that I get no White square when I am on a intersection nor do I get the street name ( FirstAND Broadstreet)

This makes it impossible to make a route stay on course.

I put the pointer on the intersection and it looks like it is exactly on the intersection until I blow it up and or use it on the Zumo and it is off the intersection. Even blowing up the map when moving a point on each via still makes it hard to place the via point. The via point placement is acting like a waypoint placed on the map when it should snap to a intersection.

Mapsource provides me with a pop up white box and the intersection street names.

Can we please see this added in the next update

We'll see what we can do. I don't think this will make it into 4.0 though.

I updated the original posts for the 4.0.1 release.

I added information about Basestation mode, intersection search, route duplication behavior, the device transfer buttons, zooming with the Alt key and changes to how coordinates can be entered.

The new measuring tool information popups are cool but cause problems when trying to measure trails. Both popups get in the way when trying to follow a path with many curves. Please give us the option to disable those popups. For most measuring tasks they aren't needed because distance is already given in the status bar.
  • Installed base camp. can put in waypoint layover times, but it does not adjust the end time, with one exception. if it is the second to last waypoint the final waypoint will reflect the added layover time.
