New firmware with adventure support has been released for:

Montana
62 Series (includes 78 series)
Oregon x50 Series
Dakota

“Garmin Adventures” is a new feature that allows you to easily share trips and photos and lets you find Adventures by other Garmin users. You can download a track from your GPS to BaseCamp, add some photos, videos and annotations; upload the trip as an Adventure and then share it via the Garmin Adventures web site with friends and family. BaseCamp allows you to author Adventures, and use a playback feature so you can re-live your trip. In the near future, Garmin devices will add support for Adventures as well.

The BaseCamp 4.0.0.4 gives you an early preview into Garmin Adventures. Please let us know how you like it and what you think we can improve. BaseCamp 4.0.0.4 will lead you to short surveys that will help us make Adventures a better product. If you have a minute to spare, please fill out these surveys. Thanks.

Finding Adventures

You can use BaseCamp’s find feature to locate other Adventures. You can download Adventures that you would like to take a closer look at. If you'd like to follow an adventure, just transfer it to your device.

Adventure Display and Playback

You can view details about an Adventure, and use the Playback feature. The Playback experience will be better if you have a Topo map and BirdsEye imagery. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8al8CHqOBmg for an example.

Creating an Adventure

You can create an Adventure from any track, either from My Collection or directly from your device. BaseCamp will locate photos and waypoints in the vicinity of the Adventure track. You can add annotations, YouTube videos and additional photos. It is important that you enter a good description so other can better experience your Adventure. Note that you can pick from the prepopulated list of activities or simply enter your own.

Each Adventure has its own database, so you can play around with your Adventure’s data without making any changes in your data in My Collection.

Publishing an Adventure

Once you are happy with your adventure, you can publish it. You can share a published adventure with friends and family (http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/eracerz/hanakapiai-falls-trail-hike-2), you can link the adventure to your favorite social media site, you can use it to back-up your trip and download it again on a different machine and you can help fellow Adventurers find interesting stuff to do.

I played a bit with Adventures, but I have some problems and some questions:

I used high resolution images from my camera, but in the publishing process I got sometimes jQuery scripting errors.

After a converted the images to a lower resolution, the problems were gone.

I like to use a link in the description, see my example:
    http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/andre-wolff/rondwandeling-bij-mabodalen/

I did not succeed to construct a decent link. I tried it with html, but the description show the html code as you can see.
What is the correct way to define a link?

Although I selected metric units in BaseCamp, you see Miles in the Adventure.
How can I get km and meters there?

Finally I should like to know how I can edit the title/description of a picture. I see there now the file name, but I like to change this.
    How should I do that?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If I look at this adventure on an iPad, I see that the text of the description overlaps the image.

    Thank you for your feedback.

We will work on the upload of large pictures. Please let me know if you still see these issues with BaseCamp 4.0.4.

I will have to investigate about the HTML links. Looks like that is not currently supported. But I'll see what we can do about that.

Looks like you figured out how to do the description. For now, the name of the photo also equals its title.

Would you mind attaching a screenshot how the display is off on your iPad? Then I will forward this to our web developer.
  • Looks like you figured out how to do the description.

    Speaking of...

When I write my descriptions into multiple paragraphs, they all get pushed together in the downloaded version, making it more difficult to read for the end user.
  • Some ideas/observations

After creating some adventures with BaseCamp (e.g. http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/tribblefun/mines-of-moria/#overview and http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/tribblefun/von-hexen-und-brundln/#) I have some ideas/observations that might help to improve the software – or maybe they are just misunderstandings on my side.

    • Question related to archive: As I understand this keeps a copy in the cloud, but the adventure cannot be searched. So this would be the way to make an adventure private and only share it with them who receive the link from me. Is this correct?
    • So far I can share the adventures in a lot of ways, but only once per link. It would be good to have a possibility to give people the chance to look at all my adventures. This might be a Facebook-app as well as a search tool. The major issue seems to be privacy settings, however.
    • Waypoint icons are not transferred from BC, Geocaches show up as waypoints.
    • The date in details is the upload date not the adventure date. I'd prefer the adventure date her, because the upload date is given in the header anyway.
    • Geocache texts cannot be editet, so they are shown with my Fieldnote-text which are only a few abbreviations. I’d like to have a link to the geocaching.com site as well as a chance to enter the full log-text. No need to copy anything from gc.com
    • Waypoint texts are shortened. Information texts that are entered via the tool in the adventure creator in BC are shortened, too. => Texts should be displayed in full if clicking on the icon or on the side-bar; alternatively they should be displayed in full length in the side-bar.
    • Not sure which size pictures are uploaded, but if they are uploaded in a greater resolution than shown in the side bar, clicking on them should show the full resolution
    • More map-sources (especially OSM and OCM) would be great – Google is missing so many small trails
    • Please give me a chance to save standard settings. Even though I don’t care if the site is in German or English, I’d really like to have metric units instead of imperial, when I open an adventure.
    • There seems to be a rating system (there are stars displayed in BC as well as on the online version) but I haven't found a way to use them.
    • Editing online would help to improve the adventure, when I am not at the desktop where BC is installed.
    • A counter for views and DL of an adventure would be nice. People being able to comment would be a nice feature as well.
    • An online player like in BC would be a great thing

Anyway. I'll continue working with this and report back with more ideas and reports.

    Thank you for your feedback.

The problem with the links and the iPad 'more' display still exists in version 4.0.4, see for example:
    http://adventures.garmin.com/nl-NL/by/andre-wolff/wandeling-rond-de-vecht-bij-diffelen/#.UJd33MVmK5I

    I have seen more problems:

    1. If I enter in a photo notations a link like
    http://www.andrewolff.nl/FotoSerie/Wandelingen/Vecht_Diffelen/slides/Vecht_121026_1052_P360p.html
it is displayed wrongly, the _ token changes the format in italic. To display this correct I have to enter it as:
    http://www.andrewolff.nl/FotoSerie/Wandelingen/Vecht\_Diffelen/slides/Vecht\_121026\_1052\_P360p.html
This is not happening for a link in the introduction text.

    2. If I delete an adventure in BaseCamp, the geotaged photo's in folder
    C:\Users\Andre\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\BaseCamp\GeotaggedPhotos
are not removed. I had to do that outsite Basecamp by hand.
  • I had about 14 or 16 Adventures loaded on my Montana 650 this past weekend.

Just connected my Montana 650 (4.60) to BaseCramp (4040) to do some housekeeping, and it only sees FOUR of them!

    Garmin Adventures are BROKEN.
    Garmin BaseCramp is BROKEN.
    Garmin Montana GPSr is BROKEN.
    Garmin software is BROKEN.

Will any of these ongoing issues be addressed?

    Having the same problem

We'll have to investigate what went wrong here. I see your adventures when I try to find them in BaseCamp, but they do not download.

    Thanks for letting us know.

I just discovered this feature in Basecamp when uploading some tracks and photos. It works great in Basecamp, but when I both emailed and posted to Facebook, the link does not work--gives a 403 does not exist error. Am I doing something wrong?

Sometimes it takes a little while. If it still doesn't work, can you post the link here? Then I will investigate.
  • I agree with the request for Metric to show in Adventures. In Basecamp 4.0.4 my adventures always fail to upload after I create and modify them. Then if I close BaseCamp and reopen it and upload the adventure again it uploads.

Is it possible to embed the map of an adventure in a wordpress or blogger blog rather than just have a link?
Also is there a max size you can upload? I uploaded my Liverpool to Istanbul trip. 70 kml tracks in a kmz file. It uploads in basecamp ok but the link shows nothing online??
    Cheers
