New firmware with adventure support has been released for:

Montana
62 Series (includes 78 series)
Oregon x50 Series
Dakota

“Garmin Adventures” is a new feature that allows you to easily share trips and photos and lets you find Adventures by other Garmin users. You can download a track from your GPS to BaseCamp, add some photos, videos and annotations; upload the trip as an Adventure and then share it via the Garmin Adventures web site with friends and family. BaseCamp allows you to author Adventures, and use a playback feature so you can re-live your trip. In the near future, Garmin devices will add support for Adventures as well.

The BaseCamp 4.0.0.4 gives you an early preview into Garmin Adventures. Please let us know how you like it and what you think we can improve. BaseCamp 4.0.0.4 will lead you to short surveys that will help us make Adventures a better product. If you have a minute to spare, please fill out these surveys. Thanks.

Finding Adventures

You can use BaseCamp’s find feature to locate other Adventures. You can download Adventures that you would like to take a closer look at. If you'd like to follow an adventure, just transfer it to your device.

Adventure Display and Playback

You can view details about an Adventure, and use the Playback feature. The Playback experience will be better if you have a Topo map and BirdsEye imagery. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8al8CHqOBmg for an example.

Creating an Adventure

You can create an Adventure from any track, either from My Collection or directly from your device. BaseCamp will locate photos and waypoints in the vicinity of the Adventure track. You can add annotations, YouTube videos and additional photos. It is important that you enter a good description so other can better experience your Adventure. Note that you can pick from the prepopulated list of activities or simply enter your own.

Each Adventure has its own database, so you can play around with your Adventure’s data without making any changes in your data in My Collection.

Publishing an Adventure

Once you are happy with your adventure, you can publish it. You can share a published adventure with friends and family (http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/eracerz/hanakapiai-falls-trail-hike-2), you can link the adventure to your favorite social media site, you can use it to back-up your trip and download it again on a different machine and you can help fellow Adventurers find interesting stuff to do.

When I Transfer Adventures to a GPS the Track Point Filter setting in Mac-BaseCamp Properties is ignored. Please apply the Properties settings when Transferring Adventures. Filtering of Tracks in Adventures will be critical for sharing.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have this thread on the Mac-BC forum as well since there are differences in the two BaseCamps.

    Cheers,

There is no Track Point Filter setting in Windows BaseCamp at this point. We might add one in the future.

If you don't mind, please post your comment on the Mac side of the forums as well. Because that definitely sounds like a bug.
  • Maybe it could be handy that the symbol of a adventure you have published changed so its a littel bit easier to see wich one are published en witch one not.

Like in the forum's where you van see that there are new postings.

    Garmin Adventures Suggestions

I made an adventure, 2012 Friday 13th Ride to Port Dover, ON. Why doesn't my adventure show up when I do a Find?

I'd like captions from my photo IPTC Caption description added to each photo on my adventure.

Photos from My Collection that have route references do not show in the adventure as having route references (Photo Properties>References).

When a photo had to be manually moved to a coordinate (because the track log wasn't active at the time), it is moved in adventures to a track point. I'd rather it stay where I positioned it.

I'd like to add my routes to the adventure, as riding someone's track is the pits. Routes are much better to share.

Playback would look better to me with North up, not track up. I'd like zoom controls during playback.

    Did you "publish" it?

Where do I find a Publish command in the PC version of 4.0.0.4 Beta?

The last step when you create an adventure, on the bottom right corner of the screen is "edit" and "publish."

Thanks, Phil. I'm able to see it in 4.0.0.5 Beta when I open my adventure there's a Login and Publish.

Is there a way to Unpublish?

Where do I find a URL for others to download and Play that don't have BaseCamp?

I am not sure if that made it into 4.0.0.5, but in 4.0.1 you will be able to archive your adventure which basically un-publishes it (it doesn't show up in searches for other people).

You can share your adventure on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or via Email if you use the share buttons on the adventure properties dialog.

To open the adventure properties , double-click on your adventure.

You can also click on the title on the adventure properties dialog, it should lead you to the online presentation of your adventure.

You can also find that link if you search for adventures, and then click on the title in the result balloon that pops up if you have a found adventure selected.

You cannot play the adventure on the website, but people can download the adventure and play it in BaseCamp.

I absolutely love creating adventures (I've got 26 out there so far and a bunch more to add) but I also like the adventures others have added. It's amazing what's possible with Garmin Adventures - when I'm in a new city I can spend hours looking for a hike or other outdoors activity but GA can save some time, when I visit a National Park I like looking for the best hike and, again, I can see how these adventures will limit the time I have to spend on searching. But the biggest downside is that not every adventure is published. Let me explain:

With so many National Parks in the United States, not to mention the thousands of parks worldwide, I can't imagine every park having an adventure published in Basecamp. Sure, users can highlight their favorite places in the park or their favorite trails, etc., but this is a great opportunity for Garmin to partner with the NPS.

The National Park Service has a GIS office (in Lakewood, CO) whose sole function is to output maps for all NPS owned properties. You know, the maps you pick up at the Park Visitor center? Those were all designed and created by the GIS department. It would be great if Garmin approached them and said, "You guys know a heck of a lot about the parks, why not create some Adventures for us in Basecamp?" They can copy the waypoints and trails that are found on the NPS maps into Basecamp and add photos, park information, emergency contacts, etc. That way, when Garmin users head out to the park, they can load up on the NPS created adventures. But it doesn't stop there...

Then Garmin can load up a certain number of units (based on the visitation to the specific park) with the adventures found in said park. These units would be available for check out at the Park visitor center and it would allow visitors to have more fun and go places in the park they otherwise wouldn't. Once they find out how awesome Garmin's are, and how much fun Garmin's Adventures can be, they'll be more likely to buy a Garmin in the future. I know plenty of folks who bought a Garmin unit because they were able to tinker with one while visiting a park.

I know, I know, this might be far fetched but I've always been intrigued by the idea of using electronics to get more people outside.

I downloaded the latest beta for both windows & mac and I created a new adventure first on the mac & published. Now I've just downloaded the adventure on the windows box and made some edits (added more photos & video URL) and re-published.

    http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/thecyr/kejimkujik-np-south-end-bike-ride#overview

Just seeing how long until the changes are reflected on the server both on the web & in basecamp (I deleted the adventure and searched for it again)..been about 15 minutes, but I'll check later.

    Feedback so far:
-When I change the default track (I have 2 in the adventure), the distance/time info isn't updated within basecamp.
-I haven't tried sending the adventure to my gps device yet (I assume you can)
-I selected biking as the activity, but the web version doesn't include an icon like when hiking is selected
-When selecting multiple non-geocoded photos, it puts them all in the center of the map, it's not very easy to move them to the right spot, or associate it to an existing waypoint within the adventure.

Previously I was using the widget in Garmin Connect to share my adventures, but this does a much better job.
