BaseCamp 4.0 beta is available

BaseCamp 4.0 is here! As usual, we are releasing a public Beta. We believe this release to be reasonably stable, but it is a Beta, so there are definitely some quirks to be expected.

If you do find any bugs, crashes or have input of any kind, please let us know. You can respond to this forum post, create a new thread, use the error reporting functionality or use the “Send Feedback…” option within BaseCamp. If you find a bug, don’t just think “It’s Beta, it will be fixed”, please report it.

For Garmin Adventures BaseCamp will display surveys, if you have a minute to spare, please fill them out and let us know what you think. They are very short.

You can download the installer at http://developer.garmin.com/apps/BC/BaseCamp_4.0.0.0_Beta.exe.

A few words about your data

When you install 4.0.0.4, all your data from 3.3 (or earlier) will be copied. You can keep using 3.3 afterwards, 4.0 will not alter your 3.3 data (but 3.3 also cannot see any changes you make with 4.0). You can experiment with 4.0 and then go back to your 3.3 data at any time (using the “Restore from previous version” menu option). This is nothing new; I just thought I’d point it out.

Change list

This is the list of changes; it’s quite a long list. There is a separate thread What’s new in BaseCamp 4.0 that gives some more explanations, and a Garmin Adventures thread that introduces that new feature.

Added Garmin Adventures, including; authoring, publishing, online search, downloading, playback, and transfer to supporting devices.
Added arrival, departure, and layover times for route via-points.
Added a context menu on the map for the hand and selection tools.
Added support for waypoint creation date, which will not be changed when updating the waypoint.
Added a list in the waypoint properties dialog to display which routes a waypoint is used in.
Added ability to collapse folder groups (like 'My Collection' or 'Devices').
Added support for temperature and pressure in track statistics and graphs.
Added support to delete waypoints that are included in a route.
Added more columns to the data view for Waypoints, Garmin Custom Maps, GeoCaches and Photos.
Added support to enter position using alternate grid/datum on the "Recenter Map To" dialog.
Added option to save original track when filtering it.
Added display of the "placed on" date for GeoCaches.
Added intersection search.
Added ability to bulk-edit more fields for waypoints.
Added ability to create waypoint from find results on the map.
Added ability to transfer subscription-based BirdsEye imagery that contain failed downloads.
Added ability to toggle the visibility of all tool bars.
Added display of postal code in address search results.
Added a read-only 'Unlisted Data' list that contains all items that are in no other lists.
Added ability to create a route from a named trail.

Improved display when many photos are at the same spot on the map.
Improved XML processing (so it should now be possible to import and export larger gpx files than previously).
Improved the Measurement tool's display of measurement information.
Improved behavior when importing data into an already selected list or folder.
Improved display of graphs. They will be smoothed now.
Improved behavior when double-clicking on a list. BaseCamp will now zoom to the data contained in that list.
Improved default file name for backup. The default name now contains the current date.
Clarified the find options (Center of view, Center of selected items). Added grayed-out text to make use more clear.
Cleaned up toolbar, hide tools that are used less often by default, always show waypoint, route & track tools.
Cleaned up route options, made it easier to create custom route settings.

Fixed the long find toolbar initialization delay after starting BaseCamp or switching to a new map.
Fixed an issue where a device's SD card would not always be recognized by BaseCamp.
Fixed numerous issues with finding addresses.
Fixed an issue where the toolbar would not display the same way after restarting BaseCamp.
Fixed an issue where the find toolbar would always be displayed after restarting BaseCamp, even though the user chose to hide it.
Fixed area calculation for tracks.
Fixed an issue where you could not rename an item from lower case to upper case (like renaming "washington" to "Washington").
Fixed issue where the Geocache symbol was not consistent with found status when importing or adding a geocache.
Fixed an issue where the preferences dialog would not remember the last sub-selection.
Fixed an issue with remembering the splitter location for map/data view between application runs.
Fixed an issue with remembering the data filters when switching between app modes.

    Unlisted Data List feedback

I'm glad for this feature, but here is a little feedback on it:

First, make it sort special.... it should not be in the middle of the tree above Utah and below Texas.

Second, there's no option to delete items within that list. So, what I did was create a new list called "xTRASH" and did a SendTo... that list, which brings me to:

Third, when you send unlisted data items to a list, they are not removed from "Unlisted Data".... this could get confusing.

and to finish the story, I went to xTRASH, selected all items and then deleted them and they finally disappeared from Unlisted Data (and xTRASH too of course).

Don't scroll list pane back to the top when I delete an item.

I was using the Unlisted Data to delete a few items to get a feel for how they get created and how to manage them.

    1. look in Unlisted Data and ensure item is not in a list, such as a collection of POIs.
    2. Select My Collection and find item to be deleted.
    3. Observe that there are a few of the same point, sequentially numbered.
    4. Delete the Unlisted Data item.
    5. Now that list is reset to the top, so I have to navigate down to where I want to look at the other numbered items. Please do not reset the list to the top!

I'd prefer that Unlisted Data NOT include items that are in other lists, not just items that are not in routes.

I believe Post Code searching has been introduced in the Version 4 beta.

If it has, it still doesn’t work for UK postcodes, or I'm doing something wrong! If I put the centre of search right over my house it still doesn’t find my address based on my Post Code(six digits in format XXn nXX). I noticed that when I searched on the address it only showed the first four digits of the Post Code so I tried just searching on the first four digits, still no joy.

Can I suggest that Garmin introduce a search facility similar to that used in MapSource, i.e. where you enter the house number (if available), and postcode (where it gives a list of matching codes, listing all the digits of matching postcodes, 6 in my case, as you type it in). This was a far superior search facility for addresses, for the U.K. at least.

The lack of a decent post code search facility is the one thing that prevents me using BaseCamp and encourages my continued use of the now unsupported MapSource.

    Cheers

That feature is not yet fully implemented. It's supposed to contain items that are in no other list. And you are supposed to be able to delete items right out of that list. But that is obviously not quite working right in the Beta yet.

I don't think postal code search made it into 4.0. We'll try to make that happen in a future feature release.

I understand. But in the current Beta, looking at My Collection, i.e. the whole database, when I delete an item, resetting the list pointer to the top is counterproductive. Leave the list displaying where I'm at. If I'm reviewing a few points, It's not friendly to send me back to the top every time.

This is not an Unlisted Data issue.
  • I thought I'd try here as my separate thread got no responses.

Is anyone else having problem with Beta 4.0 search? Using 4.0 and CNNA 2013.1 just trying to select a city from the list gives me problems. For example, search for Cities, typing Hickory in the text box gives me a pull down list containing Hickory, KY, Hickory, NC among others. If I select Hickory, NC from the list I get Hickory, KY. The problem seems that you will always get the first item in the list when you type a name in. I can then pull the list down again and reselect Hickory, NC and get Hickory,NC.

Basecamp 3.3 works fine. I've tried removing and reinstalling 4.0 to no avail.

Is this just me or my computer?

Search does the same thing on my laptop, so it's not your computer
  • Departure and arrival time for route via-points default to PM when entered. How can I enter AM time or use a 24-hour clock?
