Save or Backup the Address File

Hi,

I'm new to using BaseCamp, and this isn't rally a Basecamp specific question, but I will ask anyway. Is there a way to save the file that holds all the address info which I manually enter into my Garmin GPS? What file is this?

The reason I ask is that I spent lots of time over the years with my previous Garmin GPS, and when it refused to boot a few weeks ago, I completely lost all that data. I'd like to save that file so I could potentially merely transfer it to a new device. Is that possible?
  • You don't say which Garmin you have but in all the nuvis your favourites etc are in a file called current.gpx in the GPX folder of your device.

Alternatively you can hook any Garmin GPS up to Basecamp and copy favourites etc into Basecamp. I do this regularly so that I have a back up.

    I have a Nuvi 40LM.

So, if I copy the current.gpx to my PC, and later copy it back after, say, a device reset, it should have all my address info?

If I do a backup via Basecamp, where does Basecamp save the file (I'd like to copy it to an external UPS hard drive).

Also, if I later upgrade to a new Garmin GPS device, will the current.gpx file work on that device?

Thanks very much for your help.
  • When you copy it back you need to rename it, any name will do, eg temp.gpx.

When you reboot the nuvi it merges any *.gpx file it finds in the GPX folder with what it holds in memory, and then outputs that as current.gpx

Basecamp files are stored in various locations depending on your OS. Search for a file called alldata.gdb
