MapSource features I'd like to see in BaseCamp.

It would be really nice to have a way to outline map segments inside BaseCamp the way the segment select tool was in MapSource. That way a user could know in detail where the segment starts and ends. AFAIK there's no way to do that in BC currently.

What would be a use-case for this?

For maps that have smaller map segments than states/provinces/countries, if I wanted to view details at the edge of a map segment to determine if I wanted to include it in a mapset or not. Probably not needed for CNNANT, but would be nice for smaller segment topos. The segment list feature from MapSource is also something I miss in MapInstall and BC.

Seems like the problem is that MapInstall is a separate program and that's what you use when choosing segments. In its current form, segment information doesn't seem relevant in Basecamp since you can't use it to choose or install them.

My problem with MapInstall as a map viewer, is that you need to have a GPSr connected to use it, it doesn't give you a segment list, and you can't route on it, so you can't zoom in to see whether a route crosses a segment boundary or not.

MapSource (may it live forever) still lets me do these things very easily.

If you launch MapInstall from BaseCamp, it will show the data that is on the selected device, so you should be able to select the correct tiles. It will also preselect the tiles so that all your data will fit.

I am not convinced that displaying tile boundaries in BaseCamp would make much sense.
  • I think it makes much sens for people developing maps. Possibility to easy check tiling is a big pro for Mapsource.

Thanks, popej. Being able to see tile boundaries is a big help in fixing a broken map, but I'm not sure how interested Garmin is in supporting 3rd party map makers, or users of third party products, like OSM, who may be trying to resolve problems at tile boundaries.

Map developers (and others) can still use MapSource for that...

That might be true. However, and I fear I am stating the obvious, BaseCamp is not targeted at map developers. It would look very different if it were.

I was looking for general use cases that would apply to a good chunk of our users.

I do all my map testing in Mapsource until a project is finished and I check it in Basecamp on both Windows and the Mac. Personally I don't see much reason to have that feature in Basecamp as long as Mapsource is available.

For one thing, Mapsource launches and quits very quickly. Basecamp has improved greatly in this regard, but it's still much slower than Mapsource (if for no reason other than it's loading my whole library of waypoints, tracks, birdseye imagery, etc). I don't need any of that stuff to test a beta map. :)
