Post Code

All my Garmin devices allow (even encourage) the finding of locations and destinations by postcode.

This functionality was supported and complemented by MapSource which permitted easy postcode searches in no more than a keystroke or two. This enabled unfamiliar locations to be located in seconds and a route (even if only a 'quick and dirty' one) to be created before more sophisticated route planning commenced.

The company's now principal routing software, BaseCamp, does not support postcode search, and never has done.

As such it is not only incompatible with the devices it is meant to complement and support but, more fundamentally, it is completely useless: the functionality described above is missing and I cannot navigate from A to B unless I know where those locations are - which rather defeats the object of having routing software.

Is this situation EVER likely to change?

    Yes.

We definitely plan on bringing that functionality to BaseCamp at some point.

Forgive me, but that is precisely what you (the company) said 18 months ago.

There have been a number of releases of the software since then and no attempt has been made to introduce the functionality.

Do the product planners not appreciate that, particularly for those who use the software and the PNDs for planning routes over significant distances in vehicles rather than on foot or cycle, such functionality is fundamental to the effective operation of both the device and the software? If it were not, why provide postcode search on the PND?

To (have to) say simpy that you intend to introduce the functionality 'at some point' indicates a complete failure to understand, much less address, the needs of your customers.

Why provide the functionality in MapSource and then omit it from BaseCamp? I understand that this software is a kludge, forcing vehicle route planning into software originally intended to be used by pedestrians and so on but, given that you have an existing customer base to carry with you, those who made that ridiculous decision should still have ensured that essential, basic, functionality was provided from the outset.

For all those that have posted on this and similar issues, in these forums and (more vocally) elsewhere, please may we have a clear, authoritative, statement from the product planners (not just the poor souls charged with implementing the decisions) about their intentions for this hobbled product and particularly an explicit timetable for the appearance of a proper search function.

That's all I can say. It's on our list of things to do, but there are a lot of things on that list.

    "Fundamental"? "Completely useless"?

I must disagree. I, too, have been using various Garmin and other GPS devices over many, many years to plan and execute routes both transcontinental and local for airplane, car, motorcylce and hiking trips. In all that time I can only recall entering a Zipcode/Postcode on one occasion and that was only to see what kind of result it might provide not because it was necessary.

On my current device, a 276C, there appears to be no way to search by Zip Code. Perhaps there is such a way on a newer or different device. Or, perhaps I am just ignorant.

I am curious, and too lazy to fire up the Windows box, what do you get when you search for a Zip Code? A post office? A general area?

I am hard pressed to understand how a Post Code/Zip Code is used to plan. Please tell me how you use them when planning.

For European maps the Postal Code search would be a huge help. I'm currently planning a vacation in Italy and am creating waypoints for various sights, restaurants, lodging etc. The POI database for Europe is even more sparse and inaccurate than it is for Canada so searching by address and town is the order of the day. The problem is there can be dozens of towns with exactly the same name, but they each have a unique Postal Code. Being able to use the printed guide postal code for a hotel would put me close enough I could easily find the address visually on the screen if need be.

Trust me Jack, the current BaseCamp search engine (both flavours) is extremely frustrating for Europe.

Try travelling around the UK without a Postcode. It is not desirable but essential!
