BaseCamp Wishlist

Wishlist of stuff we would like to see added to BaseCamp.

  • Want to be able to show transparent overlay maps on the topo maps. The devices do this, and so should the computer tool.
  • Would love to see some sort of 'sync' functionality added. If I add waypoints on the handheld, I have to manually find them and drag them to the BC database if I want to keep them. Can be tedious after a vacation where I have added many waypoints or tracks that I want to save. I would find it useful to have a dialog to select waypoints/tracks/geocaches/etc since [date] and other similar selection options.
  • I'd like to see a right-click 'import to this list' option. When I import gpx files the items go to the end of the collection and then have to be manually added to the lists I want them. Then we have to go back and delete the unwanted list that was created when we imported the gpx file.
  • I'd like to see a 'Refresh' option for the device and it's uSD card. We sometimes work online at the same time BaseCamp is running so a refresh is needed to have it recognize manually added gpx files as well as the 'Send to GPS' files from an online site. Currently (v3.3.3) we have to close BaseCamp and reopen it to have it refresh the device file data.
  • Some old wishes that are probably forgotten ;-)

    1) Remove the arrival en departure times in the route dialog when the 'more info' checkbox is NOT selected
    2) With the route dialog open and deleting a route/via point, the dialog jumps back to top of the list of route/via points... especially nasty with a longer list when correcting the exact positions... It should jump back to the point before or after the deleted point.
    3) With the route dialog open with a selected route point, the dialog jumps back to top of the list... when you move / correct the via point on the map. The point should stay selected (especially with a longer list...)
    4) After editing an activity profile routing options: there are two options: recalculating routes that use the profile or not recalculating the routes and change to custom profile. The main problem is that when choosing the first option you can wait for a long time before all routes are recalculated of course depending on the size of your database. This will become worse in time when the database size increases. Please add an option without automatic recalculation, but saving the changes..
    6) Being able to change the projection angle of the map somewhere (in the option dialog ? or ctrl-alt A as in mapsource). At least for us northern Europeans the angle is always wrong when we download a updated version of city navigator Europe. Now using JaVaWa GMTK for that, but that should not be necessary...
    7) Ability to lock a library list / make it read only to avoid removing items (especially useful for collections of geographical fixed waypoints)

I guess forum participants should give support for the mentioned points to increase their priority status in the basecamp development team!

Wish you all a nice 2014 with many beautifully routes

A lot of good ideas here! I REALLY like the "lock" idea. That would help prevent me from screwing up some of my old rides!

I'm still waiting until I can have more than one "BP" in my db. That one can be very frustrating.

In addition to #7 (locking folders/lists) below.... The ability to "show/hide folders/lists (and subfolders inclusive) would be good. ~ Also, the ability to assign different colors to each folder/list ...
  • In my opinion, the module "SEARCH" must be totally redesigned. The actual one is absolutely not intuitive, complex, and not customer-friendly.

They are aware of it, no need to print everything in "bold".
And they are still working on it.

Transparent Overlays in Basecamp - Will it Ever Happen?

Displaying several maps using transparency would be very cool. We'd like to make that happen at some point.

I also like your other suggestions. I created cases for them, but I cannot make any promise when we will find time to implement them.

    Thanks for your feedback!

I just got a Garmin 650 and have been playing around with BaseCamp. I just can't believe (stunned, really) that I can't overlay transparent layers on my purchased Garmin topos. Seriously? Layers are a basic and essential concept for any GIS. I found this forum and was at first heartened to see a Garmin developer respond positively to the suggestion, then disheartened to see the post was 18 months ago. Can you advise as to whether Garmin is actively working on this basic GIS functionality in BaseCamp? Or planning to work on it?

I see that when I connect my device I can overlay transparent layers onto the Global Map, but not onto any other maps, including purchased Garmin topos. Global Map does not have sufficient detail for planning hikes. Stunned at this lack of basic functionality. Yes, I can see layers together on my device, but it's pretty essential to be able to also see them on a larger PC screen when planning routes. As the original poster said, "If it works on my device, it should work in BaseCamp". I agree wholeheartedly. This is not a minor feature. It's basic GIS.

    Thanks for listening.

    Thank you for your feedback.

I can understand that it must feel frustrating to wait so long for a feature dear to your heart. But unfortunately, every customer has his/her own opinion about what the most important feature is. On top of that, we only have a finite amount of time to implement new features (and fix outstanding issues). So we have to make decisions on what new features to implement and which features to table for a different release.

Having said all that, we do consider layered maps to be an important feature. We want to make it happen in one of the next feature releases.

It is possible to "close" list folders. I cannot imagine how it can be useful that list folders themselves are invisible...
  • You can do that now ... I've done it on mine but can't recall how, I think you right click on Adventures under MyCollection and select a setting there.

I never get that notification and cannot remember I did something special. Wild guess: maybe its related to being signed in to MyGarmin?

A couple of things I would love!

I use a Montana 650 with Olitrax and basecamp.

1, Folders in waypoints and tracks on my GPS. I go to two or three projects in a day with a couple of dozen waypoints and tracks for each. Each project might be half hour drive away from each other. It would be great to keep each set separately in a folder. Sorting them by distance doesn't work a point might be nearer a point from another project than the furtherest point on the same project.

2, The capability of showing multiple tracks like a hens foot, not in loops. All the roads in the region are laid out this way, always dead ending to minimize traffic and road use. The result is you are always backtracking as you work around a project. If you navigate on a track, you are not able to show other tracks. If you navigate to a waypoint it won't follow the track always, it will take you in a straight line when you start getting remote. The practical example is say driving along a road parallel to a pipeline route. The pipe goes off across country and then rejoins the road but you wouldn't know because it won't show the tracks at the same time. When you join tracks in this hens foot pattern it always makes a straight line back to the beginning so half a dozen dead end roads coming together at one point or joining onto one main road become a complete mess.

3, Some way of having multiple way points with the same name! OK I know! but something similar. Ive heard POIs suggested but have never been able to get them to work properly and it just isn't feasible to create them all the time. I might quad along a 100km pipeline and pass 60 workspaces. I don't want to list 60 individual names. It is nice to have proximity alarms and that just isn't going to get done for so many. A simpler example might be setting up something you could use to mark changes in the speed limit and set up a proximity alarm. They would all be called the same thing.

4, A way for the GPS to stay turned on when you unplug it from the PC.

That lot would make my life so much easier

    Many Thanks

    Don
