Map File |names

I am trying to load additional map files onto my Oregon 450. I have read numerous posts that state that any_name.img should be recognized as a distinct map by the 450.

I have used Basecamp to download two different map sets (NW topo and NW trails) to the 450. Both download OK and both are named, by Basecamp, gmapsupp so they overwrite one another. When I change the name (I am opening up the SD card on my laptop, opening up the garmin folder and re-naming the file) from gmapsupp to anything else (I've tried gmapsup1, gmapsupp.img, etc., etc.) the file is no longer recognized by the 450. It appears as if I can only have one map file downloaded from basecamp. I have other .img files on my SD card (i.e. ibycus topo 3.2.img, gmapsupp Eng) these show up nicely and these allow me to change the name and still work.

Am I doing something wrong?

As requested - file extensions visability turned on and screenshot inserted.

Note that the file extensions, for the few times that one has to note them, are always available by viewing properties whichn is what I have been doing up to now.. I hope this works - the insert image action requested a url, I have given it the location if the file on my hard drive...

The file that is not recognized by the Oregon is the NWTrails.img file (this phenomenon is not limited to this file alone - it happens to any map file down loaded from BaseCamp). The particular file, if renamed to mapsupp.img, will be recognized. The other files (except mapsupp.img which was downloaded from BaseCamp is recognized). The other files have been downloaded directly to that Oregon.

You need to post the screenshot on an image server, or attach the file. This site can't link to your local drive.

As stated, you need to host the picture somewhere.

Possibly there is an issue with the current version of Mapinstall (Bescamp does not install maps, it uses Mapinstall). Maybe I could test sometime this weekend. I always use Mapsource for sending maps as it is better designed than Mapinstall for that task.

I'd just like to point out that while using MapSource to send maps might work in many cases, it might not produce what you want for some of the newer maps. The map trimming code is old and the resulting image might not have all the data that a current MapInstall image would have, there have been many fixes made in MapInstall since MapSource 6.16, and for the newer Topo maps (like Topo Deutschland 2012), you will be missing the trail database if you send the map with MapSource, and not with MapInstall 4.0.

So while it might work many times, I would definitely not recommend to use MapSource for sending maps in the general case.

I assumed that was the case and might account for the problems in this thread as well....

The problem with Mapinstall is that it does not give a map list like Mapsource and this cause difficulties in complex map creation... If you could add in the list, then we could stop using old programs....

That's been requested a number of times, by me among others.

OK, what the heck does this new map install do? I want to add a small map segment and it immediately erased the 10 GB of maps I have on the GPS even though everything was checked as "leave as is"... Lots of fun.

OK, which version of Mapinstall are you using? If connected directly to the Oregon, it should make individual map files with names and not gmapsupp.img. This is working on my Colorado. Also sending to the SD card direct as gmapsupp.img and renaming is working as well.

Wait awhile.... what are all those numbered .img files (like 30011100.img) and how did they get there? Did you copy them directly to the GPS or did MapInstall place them there? Do you know what they are?

They look like the individual tiles that are used by Basecamp/Mapsource to display the map on your computer. Those are not intended to be copied to the GPS. The Garmin software should be encapsulating them all into a single file.

.img files are actually containers whose contents can vary depending on what they are used for. You can't just copy the files that Basecamp uses to the GPS - no wonder it isn't working for you.
