Map File |names

I am trying to load additional map files onto my Oregon 450. I have read numerous posts that state that any_name.img should be recognized as a distinct map by the 450.

I have used Basecamp to download two different map sets (NW topo and NW trails) to the 450. Both download OK and both are named, by Basecamp, gmapsupp so they overwrite one another. When I change the name (I am opening up the SD card on my laptop, opening up the garmin folder and re-naming the file) from gmapsupp to anything else (I've tried gmapsup1, gmapsupp.img, etc., etc.) the file is no longer recognized by the 450. It appears as if I can only have one map file downloaded from basecamp. I have other .img files on my SD card (i.e. ibycus topo 3.2.img, gmapsupp Eng) these show up nicely and these allow me to change the name and still work.

Am I doing something wrong?

Do you have a PC set to show filename extensions? gmapsupp.img is the name of the file sent to your OR. You should be able to rename that file to Topo.img, send another gmapsupp.img and both should be recognized. The img extension is mandatory.

There was an issue awhile ago with one of the GPSFileDepot maps that used a different text encoding scheme that didn't play well with other maps. It caused a problem similar to what you describe.

Sorry, I don't remember the details. But you might try asking here: http://forums.gpsfiledepot.com/index.php/board,5.0.html

Also, to expand a little on what Seldom has said, I have also seen a problem where someone had their computer set to hide "known" file extensions. This resulted in the file showing as gmapsupp, so the user changed it to gmapsupp.img. But the hidden extension was still there, so he had actually named the file gmapsupp.img.img and that doesn't work.

The current version of MapInstall (that is the program that BaseCamp launches to install maps) should be able to send properly named img files to your Oregon, so no manual renaming should be necessary.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291 is where you can find it.

You just jogged my memory, OSTROFF01, I had this problem when I loaded two different DIY mapsets where several of the tiles shared the same 8 digit mapname.

Falagar, that's a nice to know about MapInstall.

    Thanks

Thanks for all the info - file extentions aren't shown (I'm not sure how to go ablut changing that) but, in every case, file type is shown as disc Image File and I have confirmed .img extensions via Properties. It's still a probblem but I'll take all the asdvise and see if I can get somewhere with it.

    Updated my MapInstall

I have just updated my mMapInstall (I have the latest version o fBaseCamp and assumed that it provided the lastest version of MapInstall... cleaerly a wrong assumption) I'm now in the process of trying the downloads and it would appear that all is proceeding as it should. It'll take some time to find out but, all continuing to go well, it looks as if you have solved my problems. Thanks to you all for you advice.

I'm still having the same issues with map names

Well... MapInstall installed the maps and named them according to the map contents (i.e. Northwest Trails.img) but the 450 doesn't recognize them. If I change the file name to mapsupp then the 450 recognizes the map.

Interestingly, the latest version of Basecamp will download the maps but only in their entirety - the customized map install feature doesn't seem to work at all. I can select portions of the map with a right click (their outlines become yellow) but as soon as I release the right click the yellow switches back to black.

Another related issue, I have two U.K. maps that I have previously installed by simply writing them directly to the SD card (GMAPSUPP Eng and gmapsupp Eng Topo) and both work well on the 450 however BaseCamp does not recognize these maps.

Just a guess, but try eliminating the space in NorthwestTrails. If that works, FALAGAR might be interested.
  • You can use the tools here to enable 3rd party maps to be viewed in Basecamp:

    Partial install issue resolved

I have figured out the partial install process using MapInstall but still have to resolve the naming issue
