How to add road/trail?

In BaseCamp, how does one add a missing road and/or bike trail to the map that can then be included in a route.

I have tried creating a track, changing it to a route, adding waypoints... all with very bad results. There seems to be no way to get it to follow correctly the added track or go from one waypoint to the next without it wanting to route to every close road.
  • Look at your activity profiles. You've probably chosen the wrong one. I plan most of my routes using Direct mode, that simply creates a straight line 'route' between points, use as many points as you need ;)

Is there a way to switch to different activity profiles while working on a course? I ask as I am putting together some very long bike courses and am hoping to have it follow the road for all the rest. I am also curious if you use direct, if I still will get turn directions. I have a Garmin 800 Edge and will be using it to guide me on these courses.
  • I don't have an Edge so can't comment about turn-by-turn directions, sorry. You probably need to ask that question in the Edge forum?

As for stitching routes together with different profiles, I've never tried it. I suspect the profile applies to the whole route, but a little experimentation should show you whether it works or not ;)

Edit: Just done some experimentation. Stitching routes together won't work, as the 'direct' bit is converted once the routes are joined. What does work is creating tracks from the routes, and joining them. What I don't know (as I don't have an Edge) is whether that would work for you, in that I suspect you won't then get turn by turn directions?

Great thoughts… thanks! I tried playing around with it. First I found out I cannot connect a route to a track. I converted my route to a track and then joined the track that was the missing road that I had created. I then converted it back to route, but unfortunately all the route road directions were gone. I then tried converting my track to a route and joining the two routes. It keeps the road descriptions, but no longer will follow the created track that was converted to a route. It keeps wanting to connect every waypoint to the nearest road.

I must admit, if I could just figure out how to get connect.garmin course feature to let me route on highways, I would just use it.

You won't be able to. Garmin Connect uses Google's routing implementation. maps.google.com offers 4 options for mode of travel: car, public transit, walking, and bicycling. Only car and public transit allow you to create a route on a limited access highway. Walking and bicycling are the two options that are built into the Garmin Connect site. I suspect that Garmin did not want to risk someone planning their run on the Interstate.

Hi, I know there is a difference between my Oregon 450 and your Edge besides size :). If it does not display Tracks--then please do not waste your time reading the rest of my post.

I use my Oregon 450 all the time for cycling in places I've never been. I always use Tracks, either downloaded from MapMyRide or RidewithGPS, or in the past from RailstoTrails.org and sometimes I just draw my Track. I often modify the downloaded Track, add WayPoints--labeling turns, drinking fountains, etc using only BaseCamp.

With my drawn Tracks and WayPoints, my O450 will show how far to the Next WayPoint, the Time to the Next WayPoint, Distance to Destination--lots to choose from in the menu. My guess your Edge will not show those--but maybe.

Assuming your Edge shows Tracks--there must be a reason why you want to create Routes from your Tracks, but I don't know why when your Tracks could have the same info--as long as you stay on Track. A Route would get you back on track automatically if you left your planned route and were on a road--but if you were on a trail it would not help.

Again--if your Edge will display Tracks, I'd give them a try. I'd also try and break apart your routes or tracks into each day of riding. As SUSSAMB mentioned--you can take your Tracks and Join them in BaseCamp and then divide them up for longer riding days, or shorter. This will make a tiny more work at the end of the day and require a laptop, but it really works better from me. You can do that while you drink your Chocolate Milk :) (one of the better recovery drinks)
