Map not working?

Hello, I don’t think this is a Basecamp issue, so mods feel free to move to relevant area and accept my apologies if wrong but not sure where else to ask before I call Garmin after the weekend. I have Oregon 450 that I use with OS Landranger discoverer UK map and the map is loaded onto the micro SD card.

I took the card out and put in a different micro card with a different map for what I needed and when I put the Landranger card back in, it no longer works. The unit does not see it.

If I hook the 450 up to my PC, windows sees the memory card and asks me if I want to format it. Obviously I choose not to.

If I remove the card put it in the SD holder and plug into my computer without Oregon connected at all Basecamp loads it and it works fine.

This is odd behaviour I can use file manager and see the files on the card are all intact as it works with Basecamp. My other maps work fine and the Oregon unit seems to be working OK. I did do a full reset to the 450 but this has not done.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks.
  • my proposal: use a card reader outside the Oregon to copy the file of the landranger map into the other card, subfolder garmin and try then, if this works now in the oregon.

You're sure the card is correctly seated and locked in place?
If so, is the map locked to the card, or can you copy it? If you can copy the card data, it might be worth copying as german_opa suggests to another clean or re-formatted card. If the map data is locked to the card, make sure you don't have any GPX files on the card with it. I've had bad GPX files mess up my OR300 so bad that it wouldn't boot until I formatted the card.

Yes I checked for seating of the card but satisfied all is OK with that. There are 3 files on the card, if you copy them to another micro SD card and insert the new card into the unit the map will not load. The message is "Cannot unlock map "

You can however copy the 3 files to a memory stick and plug the memory stick into a computer and Basecamp will load the map.

The map can only be registered to one unit which it is, my unit. Garmin did tell me before that the SD card could not be backed up to another SD card but the files could be copied to another computer and recopied back to the original micro card. A sort of halfway house regard backing up.

    Hope this makes sense!
  • Maybe there is problem with contact between SD pins and slot in GPS?

Obviously windows via the oregon can't read one ore more bits on this card, whilst via a card reader, windows can read it. S it may be a contact problem as popej thinks, it may be also a weak signal on the limit on the card itself.
In each case it is reasonable to look if there are hidden files on the "corrupt" card and save all files to another place.
Then I would put the card in the card reader and use the tools of the operation system to look for errors on the card (computer/right click on the drive/properties/tools...)

I can only find 3 files on the card and have hidden files option ticked. The card checked out OK when scanned for errors. It has always worked without a hitch before and removed only once where it was handled carefully and kept in its holder. I guess it can only be the cards contact points but will call garmin in the week and see what they say. just find it weird that the computer sees it OK and the Garmin works with other SD cards!

    Nothing is ever normal

Clearly you still have a problem, which I can't offer any advice that you haven't already had. However I'm confused re your comments about the card. If it's a Garmin supplied card then my understanding is that one of the advantages of cards is that they are NOT locked to a unit, but can be used in any Garmin. You might therefore want to try it in another unit to see if it works?

Unfortunately I do not have another unit to test it on. The licensing details for the map says it is valid for use with your own Garmin unit a single user license. I`m fairly certain the unit works fine as the other SD card is OK, that contains a free map anyone can use on any unit. Oh well cant call Garmin until Wednesday but will update here the results.

    Thanks for help and suggestions

Garmin are baffled. They have asked me to return the unit and the map!

You might want to try powering up the Oregon without an SD card in it. Then, after it has come up fully, power it down, put the SD card back in and power it up again. This worked for me when the Oregon refused to recognize a bunch of GPX files that I had on a card - now it works... go figure.
