How do I selectively turn on/off custom maps and birdseye in Basecamp

Sometimes I just want to see the Topo map and other times I want to "layer" a custom map or Birdseye image over it. It doesn't seem that Basecamp has this functionality though. Am I missing something?

No registry data is needed for the gmap format. Just copy the folder to the correct directory and the map will appear on the dropdown. An author might choose to use the registry to help with things like removing the map, but it's completely optional. And I think that's the point, since gmap was first developed on the Mac which (thankfully) doesn't have an equivalent to the Windows registry.

True, but does "the correct directory" mean "any directory"? If the directory is a specific one (don't have a Mac, but say "Garmin\ Maps") then the application would only need to look in a limited number of places to find map products, which I believe need to be "Installed" on both Macs and PCs. "Garmin CustomMaps" however are "imported" like other user data. Too bad they are called "Maps", because that's the source of confusion.

We look for maps (and unlock codes) in 3 locations:

    1. The /Maps directory below where the executable resides, on my machine that is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\BaseCamp\Maps.

    2. The /Maps directory in All Users, on my machine that is C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps.

    3. The /Maps directory in your user directory, on my machine: C:\Users\FALAGAR\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Maps.

On different versions/languages of Windows the paths will differ, but it should give you an idea.

You can of course also put the gmap folder somewhere entirely different and create a short-cut to it in one of the directories described above. Which is what we do here in the office, we store all our maps on the network and then create short-cuts to them.
  • Returning to the main question. If I have custom map in GPS and I'd like to look at my tracks on GPS connected to PC, how can I turn off custom map?

On GPS I can turn maps on and off. On BaseCamp custom map is always on, when examining data in GPS. I can temporary remove custom map from GPS or copy data from GPS to PC. But I would prefer to simply turn off unwanted map in BaseCamp.
  • The Mac version of BaseCamp has an option to switch off overlays (and/or text labels), but I can't find such an option in the Windows version. Guess it isn't possible there...
  • Ditto the request to be able to turn on / off Birdseye or custom maps.

It's on our list. But this won't make it into 4.0 I am afraid.

Is this also my problem also? No matter what map I'm viewing, I get road number labels from some overlay data (I think) which often obscures detail on the map I'm viewing and I'd like to turn them off. See screenshot (which I think I've managed to upload).
  • Yes, it applies to the road number labels too. When I switch off the display of labels in BaseCamp for the Mac the road number labels are hidden.
You will have to wait until Garmin puts that option in the Windows version, or switch to Mac...

Are the road number labels part of the Global Map that comes with the BaseCamp installation? Can they be disabled by deleting or modifying a file or the registry? These labels are often way off the road on larger scale maps – obscuring the route of a path or other detail.

The popup balloons which detail what maps etc. are at the cursor are also irritating. I know which map I’m looking at and all my UK maps have road numbers on. When you’re walking in the UK, it’s rare you go more than 20-30 feet in a straight line so it makes planning a route really difficult when you can’t see the next turn in a path because there’s always a popup balloon in the way.
