basecamp route one way, garmin another

I have a Garmin 2460LMT.
I created a route using Basecamp in order to avoid a road that sometimes backs up in rush hour traffic.
However, whenever I import it into the Garmin device and pull up the route, it just sends me right along the road I do not want to use.
Perhaps I have some setting in the Garmin wrong.
I even tried creating a whole bunch of way points along the route to see if that would 'force' the Garmins 'hand', but it still sent me along the Motor Parkway.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

don't know if I can turn off recalc

    Is Mapsource still available?
Also, i did create a lot of waypoints on the basecamp software, or is there a difference between waypoint and shaping point.

I did try inserting waypoints on the route. Didn't seem to work. I think it may be combination og wayponts and settings in the device itself, as soneone mentioned. Haven't had much chance to experiment.

I don't go very far or do very much, so this may be moot. However, if I ever do manage to go on a trip, I'd like to have this ability in place.

Took a trip from Long Island up to Vermont, and I had a Magellan at the time. It gave me a lovely trip just on 'avoid highways' alone. I did travel highways, which was sort of ironic, but I mainly wanted to avoid the interstates. Secondary (and tertiary) highways are much more interesting. Slower, but interesting.
