Routes on device show as straight lines between waypoints

Hi,

Background: Device Montana 650T, Software: Basecamp 3.3.2 on a Windows XP computer.

I create a route using waypoints on Basecamp in my computer, and then transfer the route to my Montana 650T using the same map for both the device and Basecamp.

On my computer the route looks fine following the roads between the waypoints. On the device, however, the route shows as a series of straight lines between the waypoints.

What am I doing wrong?

Don't have a Montana but on other devices this can happen if there is a mismatch in the routing settings/activity profiles between the device and Basecamp.

Are you using the topo map that came with your Montana? If so, then it is behaving as it should. That map is not capable of calculating routes. If a map isn't routable, then it will just be a series of straight lines between points and won't follow the roads.

If you want routing you need to install a routable map, such as City Navigator or one of Garmin's 24k topo products. What map did you use on your computer to create the route?

Yes, I thought that initially but he says he's using the same map on both :confused:

Ah, I missed that, sorry. If you are sure the map on the Montana is routable, then you need to be sure that the routing setup is correct on the device.

The Montana 650T has a special (size reduced) version of TOPO U.S. 100K preloaded on the device. That map product doesn't contain any routing information (i.e only point-to-point routes are possible).

Either the OP has this map product on his PC or BaseCamp was using the preloaded maps in the device (if it was connected via USB).

He also says it routed fine on his PC, which I guess means he had a routable map on his PC, which he states is the same map as on his Montana ... think we're all confused ;)

Oops. Missed that part (need more caffeine on Sun mornings :D)

Guess we'll wait to see if the OP says what maps he has (other than the preloaded Topo's).

Well... technically those in (and around) New Zealand get to start the day first but for sure you have a 7hr head start on me :)
