Problems installing Basecamp on Vista

I just purchased a Garmin GPSmap 62 and to use for wilderness canoe travel. I need to install some topo maps as it doesn't come with any and doesn't have a card reader slot.

I've tried many times to install Basecamp_332 on my Dell inspiron 1525 running Windowns Vista sp2. It gets to the end of the installation and says 100% complete, but has the message "publishing product information" and just stays there for hours. Finally it will give the following message:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft/VC90.CRT,version="9.0.30729.4184,"publicKeyToken'"1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="x86"'type="win32"'. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0x800736FD

Is there any thing I can do to resolve this issue? I've read some old posts and found were someone advised going to an archive and installing an older version of Basecamp. I did that with Basecamp_205 and that does install. I haven't messed with it as I have no idea what I'm doing.

Thanks,

Steve
  • Depending on the map you're intending to install you may not need Basecamp ;)

Can you tell us what maps you're trying to use?

It is the state topo maps of Minnesota from gpsfiledepot.

If you have any version of BaseCamp working you should be able to install a MapSource update and have it run. If you are having problems installing the map into MapSource/BaseCamp you should ask about that at GPSfileDepot. Either MapSource or BaseCamp should be able to get an installed map to your GPSr.

I am running Basecamp on Vista without problems, but a couple times I got errors about "side by side configuration", and you may have found a thread I participated in on that subject.

In that thread, another user was able to successflly install an old version of Basecamp on Vista. After installing the old version, he tried to re-install the new version and found that it was now working. Evidently, the older version placed some resources on his system that enabled the new version to work properly.

So, you might first uninstall the new (non-working) version of Basecamp while leaving Basecamp_205 in place. Then reinstall the new version and see if it will now work.

About a year ago I tried to install BC on a Vista machine (not mine) and had it bork. Uninstall/Reinstall did the trick.

I've also experienced the same thing. Weird.
