You download the imagery with Basecamp and can view it there. If you have a compatible GPS device, just connect it to your computer and choose the option to download Birdseye. It is free if you only want to use it in Basecamp, you only need to pay in order to use it on your GPS.

In the US an unlimited download subscription costs $30/year. The imagery never expires and you can continue using it after the subscription expires. It will only work on the device for which it is registered. However, if you buy a subscription for another GPS device, you can use the same imagery on it without the need to download again to Basecamp.

I don't think there is any way to purchase it for an entire country. It would be a huge amount of data. Using my own estimates with the highest quality downloads, one gigabyte covers about 300 square miles. This could vary depending on the terrain and quality of specific areas. Users report a big difference in quality between different locations.

In my own area, it is excellent - they are using the 2007/2008 New Jersey State Orthophotography as a source here which was taken from airplanes and not satellites. In other areas they use Digital Globe satellite imagery.

    I purchased 1 subscription cost me € 25,- ($30,-).
Downloaded the whole Benelux (Netherlands/Belgium and Luxembourg) in high resolution in 10 km square blocks.
That are 829 blocks and plusminus 45 GB of data.
started on 26-03-2011 , finished 21-04-2011, you can't do it automated hat to do every square by hand.

I made a raster of waypoints 10 km between them select 4 waypoints, made a direct route and then rigt click and made birdseye image.

Made perfect square image with no overlap or gap between.

basecamp wil download 1 birdseye image at a time, but you can put a lot of them in basecamp they stand on hold , thil basecamp finish the one its downloading and i go to the next.

But there is another thing, it slows down basecamp when it starts up, or when you select the mapfolder where the libary of basecamp image's is stored.

    Good luck,

On your gps is a Garmindevice.xml file (in the map garmin) put this one on a sd card (in a map garmin), basecamp thinks now your sd card is your gps and transfers the birdseye image to the sd card.
when it becames full, you had to transfer them to the pc.

Yes, this technique works very well and it's what I use myself. I don't have my GPS handy, but I believe the GarminDevice.xml file can be found in the Garmin directory. So create a Garmin directory at the root of your memory card and copy GarminDevice.xml to it. This should also work with a USB flash drive.

When you download, don't use the option to transfer it to the card/GPS. Just download it to your computer and you can transfer the parts you want to the GPS later.

Birdseye sat. image is global , it depends in how much time and diskspace you have, for downloading images.
There are no restrictions (what i thougt).

If using basecamp on your computer, you can display Birdseye along with any other maps that you have. The roads, poi's, etc. from the vector based map will be shown on top of Birdseye. Your location doesn't change when you do this.

Same thing on the GPS itself, you can turn Birdseye on and off just like any other map. This does not affect to position of the map pointer.
