New User - Strange routing issue

Any ideas on this one?

I am a new user and have spent some time working my way up the learning curve on editing routes.

I have a complete route in Portugal of about 325 miles with many vias or waypoints.

In more than one instance a route goes through the empty countryside into a village and out the other side. No problem. Zooming in into the route I see that it suddenly veers off the "main road" for sometimes only a few hundred feet before rejoining.

There are no waypoints in this part of the route.

It's like the routing is literally going as the crow flies and then almost when realising the error the routing reverts back to the main route.

Now if I add many, many points via the rubberband I can eventually get it to run straight through these one horse villages!

Any ideas why the "logic" is illogical?

Cheers

Adrian
  • I'm at a loss. I opened your first example in both MapSource and BaseCamp for Mac, removed all of the vias through the village you show in the screenshot and re-routed. In both instances the route didn't vary from the original.

AALEE1, are you seeing this behavior only in BaseCamp or do you see it on your GPSr as well? Does this happen with Automobile and other profiles besides Motorcycle? What happens if you use Bicycle or Pedestrian profile? Does it happen when you route in both directions through the town?

When I see this sort of path on a map I've made, it's a broken route, but that's not the case here, because other CNEU owners can't reproduce it.

Straight line is probably caused by a short loss ofe satellite signal.

    Appreciate the replies guys.

Cant comment about it in the GPS as this is all planning routes for a tour of Spain and Portugal in June.

So loss of signal isnt an issue as this is all done on the PC.

I havent changed profiles or inverted the route because frankly with several 200 mile routes it is way too time consuming.

Strangely some routes work perfectly but others including one from Gijon to Santander suddenly veers south instead of following the main road.

You don't need to re-build the whole route to test reverse, just try creating a short reverse segment in the problem areas. Save your existing routes in one list, and start another list for diagnostic routes. It could be some sort of motorcycle route restriction(maybe noise). In the US I see a lot of "no trucks except for local deliveries". Or parts of the town could have one way streets. Changing the profile to Automobile or Pedestrian would remove some of these restrictions too. Also, you can make a copy of a route and diagnose that.
