It can just take the shortest route and calculate the distances

Who are users for this, and how many of them are there?

Why? How would this be used? It would have to be a separate map or with really weird routing restrictions. No vehicles that travel on a road would be permitted on a railroad, and vice versa. Also, travel time would be restricted to providers timetables.

Regardless of who would use this, it's not a problem Garmin can solve. I'm certain that Navteq does not include any routing data in their maps for railroads. And Navteq is the company that creates the maps that Garmin uses.

So you would first have to convince Navteq that it's in their interest to include routing data for railroads. Once the routing data is available in the maps it would probably be quite simple for Garmin to add railroad objects to the list of things that can be used in routes.

Of course they would then have to add them to the list of Avoidances, too. :D

I was thinking that MapWorm might want to start a DIY routable mapping project.

Sort of a can of worms... just look at all the "dumb GPS" stories where people drive into lakes, etc. Being routed down a train track would not be good. ;)

I've seen enough posts on other sites where people have their avoidances incorrectly set, so I wouldn't count on that to stop somebody.

    These people has got competitions

People running against old steam locomotives
Others wants to see where is the closest rail pick up point
    for trucks from trains cargo

If they can see both road and rail roads or tracks

then think how easy it would be for them on Basecamp
    to do any organization etc...

OH well, I will go back and do it myself
