My Questions about Basecamp..

In MS I can reduce the amount of icons showing while I am creating a route by selecting Map Detail Setting from Lowest to Highest.

I believe while searching around Basecamp I thought I found a place to turn off certain icons. When I open Basecamp I see a lot of plane icons for airports. I don't use the airports and would like to turn them off but would like to turn them back on incase I need to find one.

The attachment is an example.

BTW is there a way to post a photo from my computer without having to load it on an internet website?

Utilities > Options > Activity Profile.

Scroll down to 'Map Display Features'.

There you can pick on a per-profile basis which map features you would like to display. So you can turn off airports for example. If you leave them turned on with a different profile, you can switch between profiles to easily show/hide airports (or whatever else you wish to toggle).

You can also select the detail level in BaseCamp. Make sure you have View > Toolbars > Detail Level checked.
  • Figured it out....

I have a Nuvi 465t. I learned how to send waypoints and routes to my GPS.

I was reading the forum and one of the questions was, "How to get routes from the GPS to BC".

I don't know about the rest of you but I found a way to do it.

Launch BC and connect the GPS to your computer via your USB cable.

Click on the data folder of the GPS to see the routes and waypoints. Select the waypoints, routes and what ever you want in BC.

The first attachment shows BC with the GPS attached. Notice the categories.
Right click on the selected files and click on Sent to....
Click on My Collection and the files selected will be copied to My Collection in BC.

See the second attachment with the GPS disconnected.

You now have all the tracks (foot prints??), waypoints, routes and everything selected in BC. You also have copied the catagories, which I could never get to transfer from the GPS to MS.

    I like this so far.

So as Falgar stated.. I can export everything in the BaseCamp to a .gpx file using what ever method I want to retain the data....

I took a lot of waypoints and routes that I want to keep and update as time goes by and as I travel to different locations and exported them to a .gpx file. I removed all the data in My Collection in BC. When I want certain waypoints or routes, I import My Collection make my route or what ever, copy my work into a New List with a name I like. I then export the new list to my GPS and delete all the data in BC. When I am finished with the infomation in the GPS, (I normally add new locations and intresting points I want to keep track of ) I connect the GPS to BC send the data to BC and export it to a .gpx file I choose to give a name. I also date the file so I know when it was created. Then I again delete all the data in BC.

I also noticed that BC when making a route and I use shaping it tells me that the shaping points will not alert. Haven't tested this out yet.

I know this is long, but I hope it helps others that are a bit dense like me.

    Respectfully
    BC
  • Can an image be loaded...

BTW is there a way to upload an image without having to use a URL. I don't have a lot of places to store images and other forums that have the same feel of this one has the ability to upload images from your computer to the thread post as well as from a URL.

    Thanks

That stuff should be available at a MUCH higher level. Digging down to the level where the map feature list is located is not at all obvious to the casual user. The menu selections are not at all user-friendly as they simply do not give the casual user the idea of what's buried beyond them. The new user (and I'm in that group though I am no stranger to computers and software having developed databases as part of my former career - I'm now retired) has no blasted idea what an "activity profile" is all about. There is VERY LITTLE about BaseCamp that I would call intuitive.

The menu structure in MapSource was far better than what I'm seeing in BaseCamp. Y'all should also look at Microsoft's Streets & Trips to see a user-friendly and intuitive interface.

Along the same line - someone else had mentioned the normal way of saving a setup in a named file rather than everything being saved in one file. How about doing things in a way that seem normal to the typical user? I would very much like to set up a route and save it as a separate file that could be easily recalled if I want to.

I get the feeling that the developers of BaseCamp simply do not realize that THEY understand it because they are so close to the way it's put together. The typical new user, though, is very likely to be buried by the way things are presented to the user - much like Microsoft's new "ribbon" menu in their Office products makes users of older Office products totally inefficient for MONTHS when they are forced to use Office 2007 or newer products. Microsoft developers were totally stupid, in my opinion, for not providing the old menu system as an option to their newer "ribbon" menu system.

It looks like you managed to upload images directly as an attachment in your last post. These forums allow you to upload images.

I believe in MapSource you had to create the categories in the Preferences, then they would transfer. In BaseCamp, the categories are transferred automatically from the device to the computer (as lists) without having to set-up anything.

I also noticed that BC when making a route and I use shaping it tells me that the shaping points will not alert. Haven't tested this out yet.

Don't set your hopes too high. I am not sure how good support for this is with your device. This is more of a future feature for upcoming devices that will fully support shaping points from BaseCamp.

I agree that this is probably buried a bit too much. I guess we didn't expect the casual to meddle much with the activity profile settings

Activity profiles adjust the route settings and (with maps that support it) the way the map is drawn. So you will get different routes with an automotive setting than with a hiking setting. Major roads could potentially be drawn less prominently for a hiking profile (where you care about small trails and hiking paths, not about big roads).

Activity profiles are still in its infancy, but devices (Outdoor devices mostly) do or will support these as well so hopefully the device-BaseCamp interaction will work nicely.

They also offer advanced users a nifty way to set up different preferences (e.g. one profile to avoid highways or show only certain POIs, the other one to use highways or hide certain POIs) and easily switch between them by just toggling profiles, instead of adjusting the preferences every time.

I have a suggestion that can solve issues that some folks will have with menus.

If you can make the menu system user customizable (much like the legacy Microsoft Office menus are/were), then the user can pull things out of obscurity and put them at the top of THEIR menus. This will, of course, require the system to save those customizations. In a similar vein, I've been asking for print setup choices to "stick" from one session to the next. This kind of "customization" would really improve the program in my opinion.
  • Listing of waypoints...

One of the things I liked about the waypoints in MS is that you can sort the waypoints by name, symbol, comment or position.

As you can see in the attachments (wish I could upload a graphic that you can view in the thread other than as an attachment) one shows the waypoints by name then the other is sorted by comment. I put the state in the comment field of my waypoints then I can sort the comment field to show all the waypoints by state.... This is very helpful for me when I am traveling. I may not remember the name of the RV Park or waypoint but I can see what all is in the state I am in or going to.

This would be a great help in BC. Could you put this in your possible ToDo lists?

    Thanks

  • How many attachments per user...

While uploding a couple of attachment I noticed the graphic at the top showing the Sum of Attachments. Does this mean that we are limited how many attachment can be upload? I have never seen this in a forum.

What do we do when we reach the limit? Go back through all our posts and remove the attachments. That is a strange feature from all the forums I am a member of...
