How to avoid duplicate waypoints?

I am still transitioning from MapSource/276C to Basecamp(Windows)/Montana 600. I moved a test Basecamp "list" (using some routes and waypoints I had from last summer) to the Montana and am getting duplicate waypoints on the Montana. In that trip plan, I had daily routes set up that would typically end at a location (waypoint) one day and for the next day would have a separate route starting at that same location (waypoint) for that day's ride. In addition I would sometimes create alternate daily routes that would start and end at the same places but would be routed differently with different via points and we would decide which one to take based on various criteria.

Basecamp/Montana creates a waypoint and duplicates of waypoints for every time they are referenced in a route. So, if a waypoint is referenced in five routes I will get five duplicate waypoints on the Montana.

Is there a way to filter duplicate waypoints when planning a trip like this with Basecamp/Montana?
  • Hi Fatchance,

I reported this as an issue back in February. Check:

    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=25489

It's very annoying as I've had up to fifty duplicate waypoints and things seem to go downhill if you delete some of the duplicate waypoints.

I haven't heard of any resolution so far.

I would like to add my thoughts about this annoyance. I have Home, Home1, Home2 etc. In total I have nearly 20 of this same Waypoint. I do not understand why the program cannot use just the one Waypoint without making all these duplicates. The end result is a cluttered and confusing collection which I do not feel is necessary.

My old, discontinued 276C has no problem with this. It seems like fixing this major annoyance should be a simple coding matter.

After playing around with the Montana I was able to find a work around for this problem using good old Mapsource instead of Basecamp (Windows). Since I got my Montana, I have been trying to re-learn Garmin-speak using Basecamp hoping it worked at least as well as Mapsource for normal and simple route planning. With Mapsource, I tried a test where I just transferred all of my waypoints and routes made from those waypoints (with many waypoints referenced in multiple routes) to the Montana I found there are no duplicate waypoints created on the the Montana.

Since I can get it to work with the Montana using Mapsource, maybe it is more of an issue with Basecamp itself and not the devices?

Interestingly, the Montana (or CNNA?) can often determine information about the Mapsource waypoints transferred to the Montana. For example, I have an old waypoint in Mapsource called REDSTONEIN and in the waypoint's property notes field on the Montana it accurately knows that is the REDSTONE INN HOTEL. Kewl!

I'm trying to find positive reasons to manage my waypoints/tracks/routes with Basecamp instead of MapSource but am not meeting with a lot of success. It would be nice if I could find a way to transfer (export to gpx) routes (and referenced waypoints) created in Basecamp without duplicating waypoints just like Mapsource but I have not yet been able to. Otherwise, for this purpose, Basecamp is more of a problem than a solution. :(

    Hello Everyone.
I found a solution to duplicate way points. Simply do not do an entire upload from Homeport to your device or visa versa. This dumps all of the data in which every direction you choose. While Home Port and your Garmin are connect simply drag the desired way points and courses in the left hand panel to where you want them. Say that everything presently resides on you Home Port. Erase your way points and routes from your Garmin device to clean it up. Then highlight what you want to transfer then select and drag them from 'My Collection' up to the Garmin Device Symbol in the left hand pane, which places them into the device memory, or only the SIM card symbol which places your selected items into the SIM. From then on, transfer everything back and forth using this method. If you place all of your data on the SIM card then you can transfer the card between devices along with your maps. BEFORE you do either, backup all of your data on the Garmin by selecting the icon in the left pane, then click on 'file' , select 'Export' for the entire device.

This procedure allows you to only transfer new information as it is created. Create a new way point on your Garmin, then select only that way point and drag it into my collection in Home Port, where it will make a copy. It's totally easy. Just wish this was well explained in the manual. Also if you purchased a SIM with map(s) on it, make sure that you backup the map file. On a Mac when you connect to your device you will so both the 'Garmin' and 'the SIM CARD NAME' appear on your desktop screen. Just click on the SIM card and backup everything in the 'Garmin' folder.
