Can't import kml

I have a file full of waypoints and tracks exported as a kml from Google Earth. BaseCamp spins for a while on import and then complains that the "kml file is not a valid KMZ file and could not be opened".

I used GPSBabel to convert the kml file to a gpx file, and BaseCamp spins forever with a beach ball. I have to kill it.

I opened the gpx file in a text editor and the syntax seems perfectly fine. Any ideas what I can try?

Try exporting less data. And import it in chunks.

I reported this problem some time ago with no feedback from the Dev Team.

If you save your data as a KMZ file it should import OK. BaseCamp seems to only import a single object in a KML file format and that can take quite some time (30sec-1min+).

It would certainly be more helpful is the BC team would just tell us it's not working.

    Cheers,
  • Single object? I have about 100 objects (tracks and waypoints) to import.

BaseCamp is much less forgiving with GPX imports than MapSource. You might see if MapSource will load your GPX and then save it as a GPX again to import into BaseCamp. That approach worked for me.
