Route icons

Is there any way to change route waypoint icons in Basecamp routes prior to sending them to my GPS? While they appear as just dots in Basecamp they appear as large 'pins' on my Etrex 20.

I know Basecamp sends any waypoint icons to my Etrex and they display correctly, and I can change the waypoint icons on my Etrex if I need to, I just can't find anyway to influence the route waypoint icons?

    I don't believe there is a straight-forward way.

You could experiment with the route gpx file and see if the eTrex honors changes to the route symbol.

    <sym>Waypoint</sym>
is what BaseCamp puts for route waypoints and apparently that is a pin the eTrex.

    You could try
    <sym>City (Small)</sym>
which is a small green dot for us, or any other waypoint symbol and check if the eTrex takes it.

I am just not sure what the device will display, unfortunately there is no unique set of waypoint symbol across our devices.

    <sym>Waypoint</sym>

is what BaseCamp puts for route waypoints and apparently that is a pin the eTrex.

Using "Waypoint" makes sense as that, on most devices, is a small black square (I know it is on my 76CSx).

If the waypoint symbol isn't recognized by a particular device some default (blue flag on a 76CSx) is substituted.

Unfortunately, as Falagar says, waypoint symbols are not consistent among devices (or PC/Mac software).

The best you can do is create dummy waypoints in your device(s), using all possible symbols, and upload that to see which are supported (and what they look like) on your PC/Mac. If you have multiple models then you have to "rinse and repeat".
  • Thanks guys. I was pretty sure there was no simple way so thanks for confirming it, I'll just live with it :)

    ... I'll just live with it :)

Well as Falagar suggested one could edit the GPX file and change the symbol used for route points. Depending on how computer savvy you are you could automate this process (what I'd do since I'm an Type-A personality :)). Or you can just live with it (Type-B personality) :p

You seem to be differentiating between route waypoint icons and waypoint icons. Is this true?

If you choose to add a Garmin POI as a route via point, you can't specify a symbol in BC (or MS). If you make a waypoint from that POI and add that waypoint to your route, you can select any symbol for that waypoint in BC or MS. Those waypoint symbols are displayed on both my Zumo GPS models.
  • Agree with all you say :)

Problem is not the odd via point/waypoint. It comes when I'm detailing a hiking route where I could have a hundred or so vias, would be nice to be able to specify what icons are used but it seems at the mo there is no easy way to do this :(

FYI for anyone reading this thread. There is a solution.

    via points in MapSource

Note, again, that not all units support all waypoint symbols.
