BaseCamp

I upgraded my Garmin maps today and also in the process received the complimentary *(&^%%^#$ BaseCamp.

Please give me back MapSource. Tried to search for an address in BaseCamp and no matter what, it can be found even if the map is zoomed in and centred on the address. Did the same search on MapSource and worked like a charm.

How can a reputable company create such poor software!
  • Just for my own curiosity. Can you provide what you were looking for and what map product you were using? I've not found Basecamp to be any worse than Mapsource for searching. For some other things not so much yet, I hope.
  • To get any results in BaseCamp, you need to set address in "find" field, insert city name in "near" and address in "contains".

I agree that address search is very poor in Basecamp, it is slow, imprecise, with misleading results list. On City Navigator Europe it has problems to find cities in other country then currently displayed, doesn't allow to insert national characters in city name, can put exact match on second page of results.

Mapsource was not removed when Basecamp was installed. You can still use Mapsource if you like.

We are very much aware that the find feature could use improvement.

However, please keep your feedback civil and constructive, or I will just delete it in the future.

Well in all fairness the find/search feature depends on data in the maps and less on the software package.

Unfortunately there are many inconsistencies and errors in the names of streets/features/etc in maps. This has made searches a bit tricky (in MapSource) for as long as I can remember.

I always found that entering as little information (e.g. street name with no prefix/suffix) as allowable works best.

I've found BaseCamp offers more than MapSource when searching for POI categories, such as Lodging. BC will plot 15 results per page on the map so I can see where those POIs reside compared to the routes. It has multi-page results of up to 100, and I can enter part of a chain name, e.g. "Best West" and it will narrow the search to that brand.

If the name of the POI could be added to the default browser search so I could link to tripadvisor.com or a chain website, that would be a great addition. It would be nice to be able to capture the search POI name in the clipboard.

Even the search doesnot work practically. I can choose either search center of map or center of selection or center of what else. I dont know where to search, I wanna search, no matter where. For this I have the search function. MS was much better.
  • Instead of "center of.." you can write city name.
  • Yep, I had the same issue when I first started using BaseCamp. It's not completely obvious that you can type a city name in the text box. If you hover over the down arrow you do get a tip message that you can enter your own data but the when you first see the pull down list you think you only have two choices. Maybe Garmin could add a third entry in the pulldown list that says something to the effect "Enter city name here". Once you do enter a search term it gets stored in a last used list that you can select.
