Well the 76S is a serial only unit (no USB). Last time I checked serial connections in BaseCamp were unsupported but worked. However I'm not sure if the latest version will even work with serial units. Guess you could try and see what happens.

I have had and used my 76S since 2000. What a great old work horse it has been.

If you have been using it with MapSource just keep downloading the 76S with that software and storing the tracks in a folder that you can find. :)

Then if you want to use those tracks in BaseCamp just click File > Import > Browse to your folder and double click the track you want to load. Works great.

    Hi AllyB,

there is no need for BaseCamp anyway. Download the latest version of MapSource (or the 6.13.7 is also nice) and use it. It still runs perfectly unter Win7. No matter which GPS you use. MS will be always the better choice.

I really can't agree with that. If you have a newer handheld, Mapsource will not be able to receive the waypoints, tracks and routes you create on the device without jumping through a lot of hoops. These new models create a new .gpx file every day you save this kind of data so you can end up with quite a lot of them. Mapsource will only look in the current.gpx file when you use "receive from device".

If you have one of the new Nuvi models, Mapsource will not be able to communicate with it at all right out of the box. You would need to change a setting in a hidden menu on these Nuvi's to get them working.

Or what if you purchased your maps via download or on a data card? you can't use those in Mapsource, but you can in Basecamp. How about if you want to download satellite imagery (Birdseye)? Mapsource can't do that. Maybe you want to display a "custom map" (.kmz file). Mapsource can't do that either.

I still use mapsource myself for many things, and it is in fact a better choice some of the time, but it's not "always a better choice".

True enough. However I personally find BaseCamp very painful to use.

The other day I imported data (the manual GPX file way) into MapSource from my Oregon 450 and edited it (renamed waypoints/tracks etc) etc. Total time spent--a few minutes.

I then imported the resulting GDB into BaseCamp. I then spent a good 30 minutes trying, repeatedly, to drag'n'drop the list it created into a sub-folder without having it placed in the wrong place (other list or folder). Since I have an older machine it was also excruciatingly slow (.NET app).

Wouldn't it have been easier just to use Basecamp directly in the first place? Maybe time for a new(er) computer? :)

    :o
I hope after 30min. of repeating the same task over and over with the same negative outcome that you realized you can't drag'n'drop one List into another List. :D

    Cheers,
