Garmin device taking ages to connect within Basecamp

Has anyone got any idea what might be going on?

Previously when I ran Basecamp with my Garmin Oregon plugged in it used to connect and allow me to display the info on it within a few seconds.

Now it takes about 10 minutes before I can look at anything on there.

The green bar next to the "All Data" icon has a the white bit travelling along it every few seconds.

I haven't updated Basecamp since it was last OK, but I have used it on a laptop that I took on holiday with me, which is when the problem first started. I'm pretty sure it was OK before I left.

I am now using the latest version of BaseCamp and it still takes forever to connect to my Oregon device. The problem seems to be the loading of the terrain maps. The first versions of BaseCamp loaded right away. Now it can take 10 minutes to load. The problem appears to be with the terrain maps. Is it possible that previous versions cached the maps and the current version does not?
  • BC has to index the maps, but having done that it should load faster next time. Are you sure you're running BC for enough time to allow it to complete the indexing? You should see a green bar under the device that slowly moves along, you need to wait until it's reached the end and then disappears. From memory some of my topo maps took around 10 minutes initially, now it's seconds.

Is there any chance the blank line problem has been fixed in version 4?
I'm getting fed up with having to edit huge amounts of blank lines out of lots of waypoints.
  • Installing Basecamp 4.0.5 seems to have solved the issue of the massive files full of blank lines for me. I haven't seen the long connect times with my Montana (4.60) since.
I assume that Basecamp won't fix a file full of blank lines so you'll probably need to do the exercise once after installing 4.0.5
