Add Pop Up Warning to DEL Key Please

Hi

I have been going through some folders in My Collection and adding and deleting stuff as I go. Now I find that a lot of stuff that I deleted using the DEL key on my keyboard has not actually been deleted.

I am sure I read somewhere a nugget about this, lost in the many threads and forums I have been reading, but here is my suggestion:

IF I am down in a subfolder and delete a route or track, POI whatever, but I use the keyboard DEL key, can I get a pop up that says this will ONLY delete from this list and NOT from the main database.

I know if I right click on the item and delete it warns me it IS deleting from everywhere, and that is good, but if I wanted to delete from everywhere but it only deletes from a sublist, then it is still clogging up the database and it is a pain to go searching for it, because I have now forgotten the name of it!!!

Does that make sense? I know I should remember, but after clicking the DEL key, it is too late.

Cheers

  • If you intend to do a universal delete why not just select the All data folder in the first place? Personally I don't want a pop up every time I'm trying to delete stuff ... I know that in the All data folder it's universal and in the sub folders it's not.

Well, if I am inside a small list and need to check each route, track or POI whatever for usefulness, then remove those that are no longer needed, I do not want to go back to an ALL data list each time, find that particular item, delete it, then go back to my list, check another one, change back and delete, you can see how time consuming that would be, and frustrating.

I can see where another popup may be annoying too, but that can be added to the Preferences area so it can be turned on/off as the user wishes.

Maybe even a global delete option in user preferences, a powerful option, but deselected out of the box and a warning next to it when it is selected.

I am just trying to make this an easier task, after deleting about 500 routes(with at least a thousand VIA points created by the Auto function) from the database, my BC seems to be running a tad faster.
  • There's no need to keep selecting from one list, changing to another and back again as you've done, I can certainly appreciate how you would find that frustrating.

Try selecting the All data folder, then just select the items you're trying to delete straight off the map using the select tool ;)

And having deleted about 500 routes I'm sure your BC is running faster :)

If you really want to delete something, and not just remove it from the current list, use the Shift-Del short-cut.

We try not to bother the user with lots of pop-ups (I am afraid we already have too many). Deleting something from a list and still having it around in My Collection is not something we feel the user should have a dire warning about, because no data is lost, and it's somewhat easy for the user to fix (delete it from My Collection).

We do have plans to make it easier to identify "orphaned" data, data that is not present in any lists.

Consider adding a Lists column to the Waypoint data view. Sorting that would show those waypoints not in any lists ("orphaned" data) and a tool for resolving multiple copies of waypoints.

OK, thanks I will try and work on that, but if I have four versions of one track in My Collection and the same number of routes, it is hard to select easily, but I will work out a way.

Yes, it is a tad faster, but they were routes created from tracks with AUTO via points, so they all had 400+ Via points and up to 3,000. They were also orphans as they had been deleted using the Del key.

OK, I will try that short cut, it will be faster :)

And I like the idea of an Orphan list, easy to delete rubbish then, go for it :)
