Import of .img files

Garmin has a suggested supplier of the Costa Rica map (listed on the Garmin website) that I have been using for a few years. But, I am not able to import the map as it is an .img file. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
  • Pop it onto a memory stick or a card, Basecamp should read it off there :)
  • Import of .img files

Thanks, but it says "The file type is not recognized."

The older MapSource says the same.

  • I'm confused ...

Mapsource won't read files off connected devices, so did you try to import the file into both Basecamp and Mapsource? That won't work.

If the file is on a mem stick/card Basecamp (not Mapsource) should read it off the stick/card ... there is no need to 'import' it.
  • Import of .img files

Sorry, I put the .IMG file of a thumb drive and tried to import into BaseCamp. The program does not recognize an .IMG file. You say it does not have to import the .IMG file but I do not see another way to load it into BaseCamp. Is it possible, since the IMG file does not have any file associated with it, that the BaseCamp will not see it?

    Thanks for your time, Richard
  • If it's not seen by Basecamp when you put it on a thumb drive and you can't get the method in the link to work for you then I'm sorry but I can't help further, maybe someone else can?

Note though that when it's on the thumb drive you still can't 'import it' into Basecamp, the drive should be visible in the left hand pane and Basecamp would use the map directly from there.

Basecamp will only allow you to view official Garmin maps that are either preloaded on a device (like City Navigator on a Nuvi) or maps that they sell on SD cards and downloads. Aside from that, neither Basecamp or Mapsource can "open" .img files, they must be installed into the program.

Assuming that you have a legal copy, you should contact the supplier of your map. There are some advanced ways to make maps viewable in Basecamp, but this is somewhat complicated and requires additional software. You should really seek help from whoever supplied the map.

There shouldn't be any manual action required here; when you plug it in a progress bar should display beneath the device in the list, indicating that maps are being read off the device.

SUSSAMB, BaseCamp does see the thumb drive, but not the IMG file.

    and OSTROFF01:

Thank you both for your help. The GMAPSUPP.IMG file for Costa Rica supplied by "Centro GPS y Rutas Satelitales SA", a Garmin recommended supplier. There was no .TBD file associated with it, if that matters. I will contact the supplier as suggested, but if BaseCamp only sees Garmin loaded maps, I am out of luck tracking my Costa Rica trip.

Hopefully, when I purchase the Garmin Europe map this summer, I will not have this problem.

Again, thanks for all your help.

  • Paxter1,

You are correct, the bar shows the loading but never loads the CRI map (gmapsupp.img) which must be located in the "MAP" folder on the device (NUVI 3490).

    Thanks for responding,

You can install non Garmin maps into your PC so that Basecamp can read them, but you need to be able to follow the instructions in the link that I sent. I have a couple of non Garmin maps installed that work both with Mapsource and Basecamp. As Boyd says, if you can't get yours to work try contacting the map provider.
