Preferred Way to Request Changes?

To the developers: I am a dedicated MapSource user who is just starting to experiment with Base Camp. Clearly on this forum you have a loyal group of power users who have helped serve as a kind of focus group to optimize Base Camp and can continue to do so, maybe moreso as the product matures and more of us switch over.

My question is, from your point of view, if we want to make a suggestion for an improvement to BC, should we keep adding to the sticky announcing the latest version of BC availability (possibly making it very long, and not a cohesive discussion for each suggestion), or would it be easier for you if we started a new thread for each suggestion? Whichever you think is better, perhaps add a note to that effect to the "readme" sticky?

Also, as a suggestion, I find it difficult to search to see if a feature has already been discussed, since the threads can go way back to earlier versions, may or may not have been accepted for development, etc. Would it be possible to have a sticky open to all of us to read but only to the developers to update, where you list those features that have been suggested, perhaps with a link to another thread, and a notation as to their status (rejected, accepted, under development, to be in next release, under discussion, or whatever). I know since I have done this kind of work before that the team is generally reluctant to share this publicly since it is too often taken as a promise, which it should not be. But it would be helpful I think to those of us who would be willing to really help you get a good cross section of users' perspectives on the product. Thanks.

I prefer a new thread for each feature request. Or you can send an email to [email protected].

A sticky post on top with a list of already requested features would be great, but if I were to do that then there would be even less time for me to get actual work done. :) I'd be more than willing to sticky a post, if someone were to create such a post with links to requested feature posts.

Don't worry if you repeat a request that's already been requested. I usually enter all requests (that I believe we don't have a case for yet) into our feature database, if there are duplicates, we will eventually find them (for each major feature release, we go through all the cases and decide what to tackle).

I usually give some feedback about requested features indicating if we think it's a good idea. I generally do not comment on when we will implement a certain feature, unless I happen to know that we've already done it for an internal version that just hasn't been released yet.

Thanks, Falagar, for your advice and comments. I understand your time constraints and support your doing developing vs bookkeeping.

One other organizational comment, and then I'm on to posting a feature request separately:

When Mac and PC users used different software to do trip planning, it made sense to have two separate forums for Base Camp and MapSource. Now I assume that one of the goals of the Base Camp development for both platforms is to bring the Mac and PC versions to the point they are identical to the users in terms of user data organization, function, and operation? In other words, any differences are only under the covers? (Perhaps this is already the case, I have no exposure to the Mac version.)

If this is so, would it make sense to merge the two Base Camp forums into one, and have posters identify "Mac" or "PC" in the title line? That way all Base Camp users would be more likely to interact and learn from each other, have a view of common suggestions, etc. I am trying to monitor both forums now just to learn, but I suspect most users will go to only one or the other. We PC users surely have a lot to learn from the Mac users who have used BC for a while.
