v.3.3.1 Custom Waypoint Icons

Hi Im using v.3.3.1 on 2 laptops with a nuvi 2460 - one running XP and the other Vista.
I find the latest version a significant improvement on earlier versions. My main use is for automotive navigation and I have >50,000 categorised POIs located in Europe loaded into BC an on the nuvi.
On the XP machine (as explained here http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=252104) I have loaded 50 'png' icons into c:\My Documents\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols and I can access these as described and assign then to the various waypoint categories.
I have been unable to repeat this on the Vista machine - I have tried a number of different directories, all without any success.
Has anyone been able to use this feature on a MS Vista machine and if so which directory did you use? (I'm not sure whether it should be c:\My Documents\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols or in a subdirectory of users ... AppData\ Roaming\Garmin or My Garmin)
I should perhaps point out that when I originally setup the Vista machine I created a D: virtual drive and used that to hold all my documents, i.e. when I installed BC I did not have a C:\My Documents directory. I have created one after BC installation and the c:\My Documents\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols is one of the directories I have tried.

Well, the path is not absent, it's D:.

And you say it doesn't work if you put the waypoint files at

    d:\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols?

Because I think that's where we look in your case. We ask Windows at run-time for the Documents path (which is most likely checking the registry) and then use that path to build the waypoint symbol path.

My apology Falagar for not reading your post carefully - I looked for 'Documents' not 'Personal'. Sorry my stupid error.

d:\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols is one of the directories on the Vista box that I have populated by the set of icons that work on the XP machine.

This directory was not present when I installed the beta version. I created it on 17 January 2012, when I was trying to resolve the problem with the beta version. It was, however, present when the software was updated by the automatic upgrade program to the released version on 18 February.

So it would appear that the beta version did not create the My Garmin directory on the D: drive. I believe the beta database is inherited by the released version - it is beginning to look as if this problem might also have been similarly inherited, or is it the case that the software is defaulted to C: and references to the directory 'My Garmin' within the code take the default C: rather than including the complete path with the drive letter?

Why don't you search both C: and D: for "Custom Waypoint Symbols" ? One of those results should be the folder that BC uses.

    To conclude ...

On the vista machine I cannot get BC to find the custom waypoint symbols with the registry documents path pointing to the D: drive. By reference to my earlier post you can see that I have populated every conceivable location with the CWS directory.

Falagar - I am forced to the conclusion that the runtime lookup does not work if the registry is pointing to D:.

I suggest someone in testing checks this out. (Have the registry pointing to D: before BC is installed.)

Although it would good to check it on a Vista machine (from my point of view), it might be windows generic.

If you get it to work - then I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. I will have to live with it - certainly not going to change the document path on my laptop. This is the only software that will not work as intended.

  • Basecamp 3.3.1 Custom Waypoint Icons

Windows 7 and Garmin GPSmap 62s

I have tried and tried previously and never got any answer as to how to make custom waypoint symbols work.

Now that I am using the lastest Basecamp and the lastest download of software to my GPS, I had hoped that things would work.

I am no further on. It does not seem to matter what I do, if I set the icons up in Basecamp under username\my documents\my garmin\custom waypoint symbols\ then I can use them in Basecamp.

IU have loaded the same custom Icon into both F: and H:\garmin\custom symbols I have my maps on a separate microSD drive.

If I transfer the waypoint from Basecamp to the GPS, I loose the custom symbol on the GPS copy.

If I edit the waypoint in the GPS, attach the custom icon, then reattach the GPS to the computer and bring the waypoint back into Basecamp - I loose the custom symbol on the computer copy.

I cannot make head nor tail of any of this - its like there is no linkage at all???

Your problem is, I believe, a reflection of the lack of a single design authority across the range of Garmin devices and software offerings. As a consequence the software development direction and pace differs across the range of devices, software platform and software offering. To be fair the range of devices and user requirements is wide and, I surmise, in trying to address them the developers are being pulled in different directions.

My understanding is that If you wish to transfer waypoints and their associated custom icons from PC to device you have to use POILoader (http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ - is a good starting point). At the moment it is not possible to seemlessly pass custom waypoints and their associated icons, from Basecamp to devices. See FALAGAR's comment here https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=26090

POILoader is for custom POI's on maps not waypoints.

I have custom waypoint icons working in both a GPSmap 76CSx and Oregon 450. MapSource 6.16.3 and BaseCamp 3.3.1 have the same custom waypoint icons and they transfer.

You're correct that many devices work differently and you have to setup your PC appropriately but it can all be made to work. It is certainly not "seemless" though. My two units require different files (names and resolution BMP's).

Have you read this: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Custom+Symbols ? It's about the Oregon but I am pretty sure the 62 works the same way.

FYI I recently purchased an Oregon 450 and followed this. Note that the BMP files must be 24-bit color depth. The Oregon would not recognize the 8-bit ones from my 76CSx so I had to convert them all (I used Windows Paint).

The bottom lines is that you must do everything right (color depth, filenames, pathname on device and PC etc). Do anything wrong and it won't, or will only partially, work.
