Out Of Memory

I'm gradually bringing the Mapsource files we use into Basecamp. As I indicated in earlier posts both SWMBO and I work on routes so we've been exporting the master My Collection to the network so either of us can blow away the content of the local copy, import the network version and use it.

That's been fine so far but now I get an 'Out of Memory' error when trying to export My Collection. This is on Win7x64, 8Gb RAM and the database file size is just under 18Mb assuming it's called AllData.gdb.

It's not a significant issue as we can use backup/restore (which is actually better as the existing My Collection doesn't need to be emptied first) but I thought I'd report it.

Could you make a backup file of your data available for me somewhere and send me a PM about how to get it? I'd like to see if we can reproduce this here.

I took a look at your data and I am afraid exporting to gpx won't work. There will be some improvements to gpx handling in a future release.

GPX is a very verbose XML format, so it takes up a lot of space. Additionally, the XML library we use to write (and read) XML is very memory hungry.

So as it stands, gpx isn't suited to exporting large amounts of data. Your collection contains tracks with several million trackpoints total. Currently our XML tool cannot handle this.

Export to gdb, use the backup functionality or export smaller chunks if you need gpx.

I have to confess I hadn't even noticed it was exporting to GPX, I just took the default. As you say, export to GDP works just fine and is a lot quicker. To be honest I'm glad it failed as backup/restore is a better solution for our workflow.

    Thanks for looking at it.

BTW, I had several Basecamp crashes when copy/pasting large tracks from Mapsource but I've submitted reports so I guess they'll reach you by a different route.
