BaseCamp 3.3.1 has been released, it is available for download at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435. It should also be available via auto-update from an earlier version of BaseCamp.

This is a localized release, so it is available in 22 languages.

This is the first release that will feature an online help, that is why the download size of the installer is quite a bit smaller than it used to be.

Also new with this release is are some beginner videos that will explain some of BaseCamp's basic functionality. You can get to them from the new Welcome page from within BaseCamp, or by visiting http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/basecamp/#PC.

Changes from 3.2.2 to 3.3.1:

  • Added collapsible list folders and sub-lists for improved organization.
  • Added shaping point support for zumo devices like done in MapSource.
  • Added explicit support for shaping points. These will be transferred to supporting devices.
  • Added support for transfer of waypoint categories on supporting devices. These are displayed in BaseCamp as lists.
  • Added more activity profiles, with improved activity routing on supported maps.
  • Added specific avoidances for various road classes, removed the road selection slider.
  • Added custom activity profiles.
  • Added keyboard short-cuts for editing tools (divide, insert, erase).
  • Added a tools menu for easier discovery of tool keyboard shortcuts.
  • Changed to make GPX files on a memory card directly editable.
  • Changed to read all GPX files on a memory card, similar to how devices behave.
  • Improved graphing of track data.
  • Improved graphing when multiple routes or tracks are selected.
  • Improved layout of geotagged photo, waypoint, route, and track properties.
  • Added additional statistics to route and track properties.
  • Added 'Center on map' check-box on route and track dialogs.
  • Added an easier way to add waypoints to routes (Insert Waypoint button).
  • Added additional data fields to waypoints (such as address and phone number).
  • Added display and updating of date last modified for waypoints.
  • Added display of lists that contain this data item to properties.
  • Added receiving geocache visits from devices.
  • Added logging geocache visits on OpenCaching.com.
  • Added printing of geocaches.
  • Added alternate notification mechanism (less annoying pop-ups).
  • Added display settings to adjust width of routes and tracks.
  • Added support for importing waypoints and tracks from KML/KMZ files.
  • Added suggested file name when exporting (so it isn't always 'untitled').
  • Added more map details for higher detail setting.
  • Added data filters to map view.
  • Added preserving the dialog size for each data type.
  • Added option to reset track's altitude to map data.
  • Added functionality to remember display feature settings per profile.
  • Changed 'Remove List and Contents' to 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Added Shift-Delete short-cut for 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Added a confirmation dialog for 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Added hiding of Activity profiles.
  • Added creating OpenCaches from waypoints.
  • Added calculating ascent and descent for direct routes.
  • Added indication of data filter visibility state on the data list.
  • Added recalculation of more than 1 route at a time.
  • Improved printing of routes and tracks.
  • Change to prevent property dialogs becoming lost off screen after screen resolution changes.
  • Fixed issues with sending routes to the zumo.
  • Update waypoint references to new map data when recalculating routes.
  • Fixed any profiles from BaseCamp 3.2 that have invalid routing preferences (ie invalid vehicle types and incorrect avoidances).
  • Fixed issue writing out altitude when exporting to the GDB file format.
  • Fixed track filtering 'automatic mode' for tracks with no time information.
  • Fixed elevation profile labels for Windows XP (no longer invisible).
  • Fixed issue when duplicating a route. BaseCamp will now also duplicate the waypoints in that route.

    Thank you for your feedback.

I am afraid the feature to convert a route from a track isn't supposed to do what you are trying to do. Its purpose is to create a direct route from a track. Normally tracks are very detailed (because they usually are recordings of a trip you have taken) and it wouldn't make sense to convert them to anything but direct routes.

I admit that what you describe could be a valid use-case as well. It's just not something the software is currently made to handle. I'll add this to our list of possible future features, but it might be quite a while till it makes it to BaseCamp.

The default color for tracks (and routes) is definitely doable. I'll add a case for this as well. Again, no promises when this will make it into a release.

I hope you're just kidding about this. Those cases were said to be added months ago. Long enough ago that many of us were half expecting preference settings for default track and route colours might show up in the most recent feature release.

That's not a complaint about the latest release, which contained a ton of stuff. It's just a concern that if the cases are only being added now it means we'll be waiting for a long time to see anything. And we've already been waiting for a very long time.

Like I always say, no guarantees when this will make it. Our list of possible features is very, very, very long. It is simply not possible to implement them all in one release.

The more critical we think a feature or bug is, and the more we hear about it on the forums, the more likely it is that we will add it.

    Problems setting preferences

I have 2 computers, one running windows 7 the other using XP. On the computer running XP there is no slider bar to alter the road preferences. I am using it in motorcycle mode and on the 7 computer I can adjust it to suit the type of road I want it to route on. If I try to do a route on the XP computer you have to put lots of waypoints, otherwise it takes you all over the place. Is this an issue with XP? I have to say I do not get this with mapsource, but it would appear that Garmin will put all their work into Basecamp and not mapsource.
  • Not sure what 'slider bar' you're referring to?

I have BC running on Win 7 and XP and see no difference between the two.

If you're talking about toolbars make sure you have the same ones selected by going to View>Toolbars

The slider bar for road preferences is gone.

You can set specific avoidances for road types now, which should be a bit more straight-forward and is also more in line in how (some of) the units do it.

But isn't it still the case that as far as routing preferences, the GPS units do not "talk to" Base Camp, just as they didn't to MapSource? This has always been a complaint of Zumo users anyway, that the Zumo does not have any matching routing settings (custom road speeds, vehicle type, road type preferences, avoidances, etc.), so if a route created in MapSource is downloaded to the unit, and ultimately is recalculated for any reason, either due to an enroute change or off-route auto-recalc, the result can be completely different than what was planned. This has led many Zumo users to conclude that the customization of routing preferences is essentially useless.

In the focus on Base Camp, it seems that Garmin has a chance to do something great here, by making the unit software capable of using identical routing settings as Base Camp, and receiving those settings based on whatever was used to make a route in BC, via Activity Profiles. That is, take a more systems approach. That way, a route would be calculated identically on the unit as it is in BC, since the settings for that route would be identical. What a concept! Is Garmin moving at all toward doing this?

We are moving towards that goal. But it's still a very long way to go.

    POI an BC

Why it's impossible to delete POIs in the device with BC?
Handling with tracks, routes and POI would be much easier!
Or is the problem in front of the device? ;)
  • POIs (unless you've loaded them yourself) are part of the map data, they can't be deleted.
