BaseCamp 3.3.1 has been released, it is available for download at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435. It should also be available via auto-update from an earlier version of BaseCamp.

This is a localized release, so it is available in 22 languages.

This is the first release that will feature an online help, that is why the download size of the installer is quite a bit smaller than it used to be.

Also new with this release is are some beginner videos that will explain some of BaseCamp's basic functionality. You can get to them from the new Welcome page from within BaseCamp, or by visiting http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/basecamp/#PC.

Changes from 3.2.2 to 3.3.1:

  • Added collapsible list folders and sub-lists for improved organization.
  • Added shaping point support for zumo devices like done in MapSource.
  • Added explicit support for shaping points. These will be transferred to supporting devices.
  • Added support for transfer of waypoint categories on supporting devices. These are displayed in BaseCamp as lists.
  • Added more activity profiles, with improved activity routing on supported maps.
  • Added specific avoidances for various road classes, removed the road selection slider.
  • Added custom activity profiles.
  • Added keyboard short-cuts for editing tools (divide, insert, erase).
  • Added a tools menu for easier discovery of tool keyboard shortcuts.
  • Changed to make GPX files on a memory card directly editable.
  • Changed to read all GPX files on a memory card, similar to how devices behave.
  • Improved graphing of track data.
  • Improved graphing when multiple routes or tracks are selected.
  • Improved layout of geotagged photo, waypoint, route, and track properties.
  • Added additional statistics to route and track properties.
  • Added 'Center on map' check-box on route and track dialogs.
  • Added an easier way to add waypoints to routes (Insert Waypoint button).
  • Added additional data fields to waypoints (such as address and phone number).
  • Added display and updating of date last modified for waypoints.
  • Added display of lists that contain this data item to properties.
  • Added receiving geocache visits from devices.
  • Added logging geocache visits on OpenCaching.com.
  • Added printing of geocaches.
  • Added alternate notification mechanism (less annoying pop-ups).
  • Added display settings to adjust width of routes and tracks.
  • Added support for importing waypoints and tracks from KML/KMZ files.
  • Added suggested file name when exporting (so it isn't always 'untitled').
  • Added more map details for higher detail setting.
  • Added data filters to map view.
  • Added preserving the dialog size for each data type.
  • Added option to reset track's altitude to map data.
  • Added functionality to remember display feature settings per profile.
  • Changed 'Remove List and Contents' to 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Added Shift-Delete short-cut for 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Added a confirmation dialog for 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Added hiding of Activity profiles.
  • Added creating OpenCaches from waypoints.
  • Added calculating ascent and descent for direct routes.
  • Added indication of data filter visibility state on the data list.
  • Added recalculation of more than 1 route at a time.
  • Improved printing of routes and tracks.
  • Change to prevent property dialogs becoming lost off screen after screen resolution changes.
  • Fixed issues with sending routes to the zumo.
  • Update waypoint references to new map data when recalculating routes.
  • Fixed any profiles from BaseCamp 3.2 that have invalid routing preferences (ie invalid vehicle types and incorrect avoidances).
  • Fixed issue writing out altitude when exporting to the GDB file format.
  • Fixed track filtering 'automatic mode' for tracks with no time information.
  • Fixed elevation profile labels for Windows XP (no longer invisible).
  • Fixed issue when duplicating a route. BaseCamp will now also duplicate the waypoints in that route.
  • We'll hopefully come up with some solution to this problem. How exactly that solution will look like, I cannot yet say.

Back in the day, when there were two distinct map products for North America (Canada and USA were separate products) most if not all roads crossing the border didn't match up at the join. The offset could be as much as 1/2 mile. It made for some very interesting routes as the program searched for a road that was continuous. :) But, MapSource would continue a route if a point were placed at exactly the end of one road segment and the exact beginning of the continuation. A short straight line would be created joining the two roads and the auto routing process would proceed unaffected. It should be possible with BaseCamp.
  • I would like to see the the zoom function return to the Mapsource method. I like the ability to directly select the scale factor and not have to step to the desired scale. Thanks,
    Dave

Dave -- I am just starting to learn BC, but it seems to me that function does exist, though it looks different than MS. If you hover around the blue North arrow, the zoom bar will appear. Then if you hover over the zoom bar, you can pick a zoom level and click, and voila, you are there. Actually one less click than before, you no longer have to click to get the drop-down list of levels. Not bad.
  • Or if you want it there permanently select View>Map controls>On :)
  • Thanks for the information. I was aware of the map control but I guess I didn't see the option to have it always available. I got annoyed with the map control when using it on the laptop. On the laptop I would click on the north arrow and when moving over to the zoom slider I would head to the + or - part of the slider, miss slightly, and the tool would go away. Back to the arrow and start over. With the control always displayed I don't have this problem so I guess it's a non issue for me. Maybe if the tool remained displayed as long as the mouse pointer was within an imaginary square encompassing the entire tool it would help.

I would like to see two additional features in BaseCamp. First, to be able to temporarily turn any tool into the pan tool by holding down the Ctrl key and second, to be able to print a track's profile,

Something like your first suggestion is already planned.

And you can already print a track's profile.
  • Thanks the new Basecamp is so good, I started using it :)

Unless I am completely lost, the handling of maps and of custommaps/birdseye is inconsistent. Let's say I am preparing a trip and build a ruote using map X. If I'd like to check a detail (eg. is beach Y rocky or sandy?), I can copy a custommaps/birdseye into the same list. If afterwards I want to continue building my route and viewing map X I have to remove the custommaps/birdseye from the list. Would it not be much easier if the custommaps/birdseye could be selected like other maps in the map menu? Switching back & forth would become so easy.
    Cheers

Just a bit of "word on the street" feedback.

There are folks that are going to be first time users of Win-BC with the v3.3.1 release. They may or may not have full-time internet connectivity. By not including the HELP data with the product and requiring an online connection to get to it, you will have lost a customer.

I personally think it's a mistake to remove the locale help data. I would have posted this at release time but after going over all of the features in Win-BC, I have had to make a clean cut from Windows BaseCamp do to the continued divergence between Win-BC and Mac-BC.

    Cheers,

I am pretty sure we will keep the help online. I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages (which I admit exist). But, it's a lot easier to maintain and update for our help team, and it reduces the download size of our application by quite a bit.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Mac help will end up online as well eventually.

I also have to say that 3.3.1 is an odd time to forsake Windows BaseCamp because of parity issues, because no other release has had more feature parity issues resolved than that one. We definitely strive to achieve feature parity between the two platforms and 3.3 was a huge step in that direction.

    Routing Issues From Tracks Conversions

    Hi there at support

I have been using BC 3.3.1 on Windows 7 Laptop since my new Montana arrived.

I have a couple of issues, one of them is a major bug in the software, this is how it goes:

I have my main profile set to Automotive, I am using Europe City Nav 2012 as the base map. I have a pile of GPX tracks of bike roads and I want to convert them to routes so I can ride them :) The steps I take are as follows

-- import the track GPX files into a list
-- double click a track and change the track colour from default grey to green(how awful, could the default not be red or green or something so it can be seen on the map?)
-- click create route, and choose, say 10 via points for a twisty mountain route
** this is where the problem occurs, I have already said my profile is Automotive, it has just made me a route in DIRECT, so I now have to click the drop down box and change it to Automotive, so it now does more calculations, then I need to highlight the middle 8 waypoints points and right click and select 'do not prompt on arrival', then it does more calcs, then finally it stops.

    Suggestions

    1. Can you fix it so when I select a default profile it carries over to ALL functions of the software please? This is a must have bug fix.

    2. Is it possible to make the default imported track colour something other than grey? This is just a 'would like' to have, but others may not

    3. If I am converting from a track to a route, is it not a "given" that all points in between the beginning and end points are just "VIA" points and should be by default 'shaping points' instead of asking, especially in Auto or Motorbike mode? Maybe there could be a choice in the popup box, if shaping points are selected, this would be another step we do not have to worry about.

    4. Once the route calculations have finished, there is no OK button to click, so it seems unfinished, to close the properties box I click the red X at top right, it would be nice to have a button that 'shows' it has finished and it is OK to close the window.

**EDIT** On a separate but probably linked problem, while doing these track to route conversions, of which I have many hundreds, Basecamp is continually crashing. There is no common thing that I can see myself doing except, creating routes from tracks following the above steps. This has happened over 30 times I reckon in the past week or so, each time I fill out my email addy and send the report(sometimes my comments are a bit heated, excuse me ) The worst time was yesterday, it crashed and LOST every list and folder I had.

Lucky for me I know about backups and just restored from an earlier saved one. But each time it crashes I lose an hour of work, the save function takes so long it is not worthwhile to save more often.

Anyway, I can see some benefits of BC, although I was a seasoned Mapsource user, so if you can get these little issues fixed I would appreciate it :)

    Cheers
