Basecamp 3.3.0.3 & Montana confusion

Maybe I'm just very confused. I've been using a GPSMAP60cs and Mapsource for 7 years so maybe I'm not.

I'm trying to use Basecamp with a Montana 600 and have run into a problem.
I have a few hundred waypoints and perhaps 60 routes defined in Basecamp. The majority of these routes use one of the waypoints (Home) as a starting point and another waypoint as a destination. When I transfer these routes to the Montana a get a new Home waypoint in the Montana Waypoint Manager list for every route. So I now have about 50 identical Home waypoints.

I do notice that if I clear out the PC collection and transfer from the Montana back to Basecamp I'm back to only one Home waypoint. So maybe the problem is in the device. But since I can't use Mapsource to confirm I'm stuck.

I can't believe this is how it's supposed to work. Any ideas?

Are there specific hardware lists on Garmin Forums? I couldn't find anyting for the Montana. I've got a few requests I'd like to pass on to the firmware folks.

Thanks,
Dave

    Dave,

I can reproduce this behavior and I agree that this is not how it is supposed to work.

We will investigate if that is something that needs to be remedied on the device or BaseCamp side.

You can always report device issues to product support, the link is in my signature.

There is also a special address for Montana bug reports: [email protected]
  • Just wanted to let you know that after updating to BC 3.3.1 and device firmware 3.90 this issue changed somewhat. Previously, I would get 50 instances of my Home waypoint on the device when I transferred from the PC. Now I get 5 instances of the Home waypoint. So, something changed.

Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking ahead and didn't try just the BC update before doing the device update. So I can't say which one changed the behavious. Maybe just the land of unintended consequences?

I do not think we changed anything.

BaseCamp writes the Home waypoint into every route routeX.gpx file that contains that waypoint.

On the device, you will see each of those.

When BaseCamp reads them back, it recognizes that they are all the same waypoint and combines them into one.

We will have to investigate if we have to change the way BaseCamp writes the gpx data or if we can make the devices smart enough to detect waypoint duplicates.

The reason BaseCamp writes duplicates is to make sure that each routeX.gpx file can live on its own and doesn't rely on data from other files.
