I have a 3490. I can delete my trip logs and waypoints on the device itself. However, when I connect the unit to Basecamp and select internal storage, all the tracks and waypoints that I deleted on the Nuvi, still appear (but only on Basecamp - not the unit itself). This is a bug for sure as the Nuvi masks out the data but obviously it still is in the unit unless by chance the information is cached on the PC side for Basecamp. Not sure but I have submitted this information to a contact I met at CES so I'm hoping this can be resolved. I would hate to sell this unit down the road with all my information in it (and still building).
I am not sure why you offered the above. I do not use Traffic Trends and the URL you suggested is not complete in that it does not describe the "sms_info_list.db" file in SQLite directory.
Here is a better description of what I found (I am using BaseCamp):
How to clean a Nuvi 3590 of all waypoint and route data.
Remove Nuvi 3590's waypoints (saved places) via the Nuvi's "delete all saved places" process.
Note - This only stops the Nuvi from accessing them, they are still in the Nuvi, hidden.
Test the Nuvi 3590 contents by connecting to the computer with a USB cable and downloading it's data into BaseCamp.
You will see waypoints because they are still in the Nuvi, hidden.
To get to the hidden waypoint and route data you need to unhide the protected “.System file” as follows:
1. Start Nuvi and go to map screen.
2.Tap the dashboard "speed" button to go to the speedometer screen.
3. Press the speedometer circle for 10 seconds.
4. The developers screen will pop up
5. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
6. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
7. Shut down Nuvi and connect to the computer with a USB cable
8. Windows Explorer will see the Nuvi as a hard drive.
9. Explorer will now see all files including the "hidden" .System directory.
Delete all the waypoints hidden in the Nuvi as follows:
1 - In .System directory go to the SQLite directory.
2 - Delete the "sms_info_list.db" and "system.db" files.
Note - In some cases you will also need to delete all files in the GPX directory
If you want to delete all the routes in the Nuvi, delete this directory:
1 - In .System directory delete the Trips directory
Note - If trips are deleted via the Nuvi's "delete trip" process they will not appear in the .System directory.
Deleted trips do not stay hidden in the Nuvi.
Well my point was that I don't believe the db files you quote need to be deleted to get rid of user entered waypoints, routes/tracks, trip log etc., that can be done using the nuvis normal menus. I could be wrong though ... are you able to post the detail of what's in the db files? It would be useful to see exactly what data you think you're getting in these db files that requires the detailed action you're suggesting :)
I have deleted waypoints using the Nuvis normal menus. Then when I connect to the computer and download the Nuvi's data into BaseCamp l see all the waypoints that I just deleted. If you are correct why do I see those waypoints still coming from the Nuvi? I have duplicated this example at least 20 times, always the same results. That is why I printed the "detailed action". After taking this action I download the Nuvi's data into BaseCamp l see nothing - indicating success. It is the only way I have been able to remove the data from the Nuvi.
I'm positive you can duplicate what I have described. Then you could look at the detail in the DB files and see exactly what data is there. I would be happy to thank you if there is a better way.
PREROLL started this thread describing the same problem. PPAD75 gave the solution that prompted my "detailed action". I am a bit surprised that you believe that using the Nuvis normal menus will accomplish the goal. Above you talked about using BaseCamp and its effect on the GPX folder. Maybe that is why we are having this problem as all the waypoints in question were downloaded from Basecamp to Nuvi. Maybe waypoints entered into Nuvi, using the Nuvi menus can be totally deleted via the Nuvi menus and the Basecamp downloads is our dilemma.
Did you do as suggested then and delete the other files in the GPX folder? That action followed by deleting all favorites etc on the nuvi works with every other nuvi model AFAIK. Maybe Falagar could confirm or otherwise that BC doesn't read any data from the .db files in the .system folder.
By golly, you are correct! I owe you a big apology and a beer :D
I deleted the waypoints using the Nuvi menu. Then I connected it to the computer and deleted all files in the GPX folder and then downloaded the Nuvi into Basecamp and WHALA! The only data coming from the Nuvi was the new 001 waypoint.
Is that what you meant for me to do?
I thought I had done that before with no successful results. I must have fat fingered something or used a wrong sequence. Again, thanks for staying with me on this and getting me back on track. You must be correct that BC doesn't read any data from the .db files in the .system folder.
Hopefully this will be helpful to the others following this thread.
Thanks for confirming that, I'm sure it will help others :)
Incidentally the .system folder is hidden for a reason and deleting files within it can cause all sorts of problems, including 'bricking' the nuvi. Be careful what you do in there.
What has not been addressed is: 1) is this behavior somehow what Garmin intended? 2) what causes this condition (hidden items that cannot be deleted without these extraordinary measures)?
For me, it is usually items added by the Google Maps plug-in thingy where you can "Send to GPS" that get into this zombie state.
It's certainly not a bug. It's how it's intended to operate. To be fair the items to be deleted aren't 'hidden', they are in a visible folder whenever you connect your GPS to your PC/Mac. What is not so good is that this behaviour isn't documented by Garmin, but then documentation is pretty sparse these days hence the popularity of user forums, and that is true of many companies :)
