Basecamp Still Sees Deleted Waypoints & Tracks On Nuvi

I have a 3490. I can delete my trip logs and waypoints on the device itself. However, when I connect the unit to Basecamp and select internal storage, all the tracks and waypoints that I deleted on the Nuvi, still appear (but only on Basecamp - not the unit itself). This is a bug for sure as the Nuvi masks out the data but obviously it still is in the unit unless by chance the information is cached on the PC side for Basecamp. Not sure but I have submitted this information to a contact I met at CES so I'm hoping this can be resolved. I would hate to sell this unit down the road with all my information in it (and still building).

See if your device has a GPX\Archive folder. That contains older archived trip logs that you can move to your PC (if you care to keep them) and delete. They will have a numbered name of 1.gpx, 2.gpx,...,20.gpx.

If you delete Temp.gpx and Current.gpx, that should remove any record of Waypoints. If you exported waypoints to your device under a different name, you may need to search for *.gpx to identify where on your device they were saved.

If you're on a Mac, empty the Trash before disconnecting.

Note: I'm only familiar with the Zumo line, so your Nuvi may be somewhat different. One of my Zumo devices hides some of the folders, so you may need to change Windows Explorer to display hidden files and definitely uncheck Hide known file types so you can see all file extensions.

Thanks for the input. I finally had a chance to test this and it worked with one exception. When I deleted the Current.GPX, the Position.GPX, and the Temp.GPX, it got rid of all the old trips and waypoints that Basecamp (not the unit) was seeing. I resent them all back into the unit from My Collection. However, the unit defaults to the Chicago area and when I re-acquire a sat signal, the unit recreates a waypoint named: 001. When I look at the location (Show On Map) for 001, it shows the location where I acquired the sat signal but again, the unit does not show this waypoint, only Basecamp reveals it.

    Thanks again!
  • One footnote to the above thread. Waypoint 001 is polled by Basecamp from the Position.GPX file. If that file does not exist, then the 001 waypoint does not either.

The issue is, Basecamp has a issue using the "MTP" storage mode, change to "Mass Storage" and it will be ok. I beleive your Nuvi also uses the "MTP" mode as a default. Only the new Nuvis have the "MTP" mode. One thing you will need to do is press the computer "Safely remove Hareware" icon before you disconnect the USB cable. Your Nuvi will show up as a regular drive letter in the Explorer window and it will show as two drive letters when you use the "safely remove Hardware". This is normal and expected.

See my topic "cannont delete old route previously sent to Nuvi 2555LMT"

I tried it in both MTP and Mass Storage Modes and have receive the same results with Basecamp. I need to delete those files in order for Basecamp not to report the old waypoints, routes/trips, and initial location when selecting Internal Storage in Basecamp. It was worth a shot though...thanks.

I am having this same issue on my Nuvi 2555LMT but for the life of me I can't find where to switch to mass storage mode.

    Thanks,

Never mind, found it, reposting here:

    1. To make all of Nuvi files visible you must unhide protected files via Win7 like any other HD.
    2. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    3. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    4. The Developers Screen will pop up
    5. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    6. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    7. Shut down NUVI and hookup to Computer USB cable
    8. Start NUVI and it should recognize it is hooked up to the computer.
    9. Explorer will now see all files in ROOT directory and the .System directories.

Or go to the speedometer screen and press the speedometer circle for 10 seconds and that will bring you to the same place for the MTP settings.

I have a new Nuvi 3590 and found by trial and error that I needed to modify PPAD75's process to remove all waypoint and trip data from the device.
I tested the device's contents by downloading it's data into BaseCamp. There would always be waypoints still in the Nuvi until I used the following process.

Note: It is important that you first delete your waypoints off the Nuvi using Nuvi's "delete all saved places".

You need to unhide the protected “.System file” in order to get to the hidden waypoint and route data. Unhide instructions are:

    1. Start Nuvi by itself and go to map screen.
2.Tap the dashboard speed button to go to the speedometer screen.
    3. Press the speedometer circle for 10 seconds.
    4. The Developers Screen will pop up
    5. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    6. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    7. Shut down Nuvi and hookup to Computer with a USB cable
    8. The computer explorer will see the Nuvi as a hard drive.
    9. Explorer will now see all files including protected/hidden the .System directories.

If you want to delete all waypoints and routes hidden in the Nuvi, delete these files:
1 - In .system directory go to the SQLite directory
2 - Delete the "sms_info_list.db" and "system.db" files to delete waypoints
3 - Delete the "Trips" directory to delete routes

In some cases you will also need to delete all files in the GPX directory
  • AFAIK that isn't necessary

Simply deleteing through the nuvi menu system will remove all your waypoints, routes etc if you select to delete them.

Where the issue gets confusing is here. If you use Basecamp (or any other program) to send waypoints, trips/routes, whatever to your nuvi this is done by Basecamp (bear in mind other programs work in a similar fashion) sending a file called temp.gpx into the GPX folder on your nuvi. On boot your nuvi merges ANY gpx file it finds into what it currently holds (also contained in current.gpx in the GPX folder) and then rewrites current.gpx. Note that current.gpx is simply a one way copy of what your nuvi holds in inaccessible memory. You can delete it but your nuvi will recreate it.

Now, if you leave that temp.gpx file in the GPX folder after it's been merged you'll never be able to delete the waypoints etc it contains, since your nuvi will remerge it every time you boot it. You must delete temp.gpx

@JOHNFJENSEN Have a look at the thread in this forum, http://forums.gpsreview.net/viewtopic.php?t=20009, I think what you are seeing is possibly the traffic trends and myTrends data :)
