? How to make routes from tracks of loop trails ?

I walked several of our single track loops with the Oregon 550t. The tracks come up fine in basecamp. I can see each loop on topo 24K , I can also see the tracks of the walk in and the walk between all the different loops and I marked waypoints at the POI's in our trail system. How do I edit all this ?
Each trail has a name, I would like to make a route out of the tracks of
each individual loop trail. I do complex editing with multitrack audio and also
video (Reaper,Audition,Vegas) software but I just cant figure out basecamp...
Do I need other software to do basic editing to the great tracks my Oregon 550t is laying down ? I would further like to save the routes over topo24k
for each loop as a jpeg so I can share maps of the trails we have.
Thanks much for any help !
  • You can turn on the editing tools in the toolbar if they aren't already turned on. Go to VIEW > Toolbars and make sure the Edit tools are checked.

You can also edit by using the tools listed in the TOOLS menu or right-clicking on a track to get some available actions in the context menu.

If all of your track data is showing up as one single gigantic track you can divide it at various points to make smaller segments.

If your track data is chopped up into segments that aren't complete you can join them together into larger segments. If you have a lot of fragmentation you might find it necessary to join some smaller pieces into segments larger than what you really want and then use the divide tool to prune them to what you really want.

Don't be afraid to experiment. If using a tool doesn't result in quite what you wanted or expected, Ctrl-Z (or EDIT > Undo) is your friend. It's a multi-level undo and holds a massive amount of data in the undo buffers.

If you right-click on a track in the data pane at the left, one of the available functions is "Create Route from Selected Track". This will turn the track into a route.

Are you sure you want to create routes from the tracks? E.g. do you understand what a route is/does in this context? If they are truly offroad tracks I'm not sure what value you will get from turning the tracks into routes.

If you right-click on a track in the data pane at the left, one of the available functions is to print.

If you are using Windows 7 you can use the Snipping Tool to grab a screen shot of the portion of the Basecamp display you want and save it as a jpeg (or html, png, gif). You can even use the Snipping Tool to do a bit of basic annotation on the image after you grab the screenshot. If you're using XP you can use the shortcut keys (Shift-PrtScn, Ctrl-PrtScn) for screenshots or you can download dozens of screen capture programs that will do the same thing as Windows 7's Snipping Tool and more. That's just basic Windows stuff. If you are comfortable with the kinds of apps you mentioned, that's probably already pretty basic stuff for you.

You need to be more adventuresome and explore Basecamp just like you have explored those trails. The clues are all there. Just remember Ctrl-Z. ;)

    Enjoy.

    Wow , now that's what I call a reply, Thanks Much !

I want to make them into routes because if I ask the Oregon to
navigate from my position on a loop to, say a poi on another trail , or anything similar to this, It directs me in a straight line, disregarding the tracks I made of the existing trails. I am thinking if I make them all routes, the oregon will then navigate me through the routes I made and not in a straight line. Our trail system covers a few thousand acres with several impassable gorges, ravines or developments between so navigating the trails is the
only way to go. I know the garmin will use existing roads but our trails are not on any maps . That's one reason I want to make them into routes, and also to be able to print them so they look like roads, not track points. Thanks so much for your detailed response. If you have any links to video's that show just what you explained, please fwd them my way. Thanks much !

As I suppose you have determined by now, Routes are not going to work for you. There is no routing data in your map for the Trails you are interested in so your GPS and BaseCamp will route you in a straight line from Start Point to End Point for that reason. Your Tracks however can be used to navigate on the GPS as you are aware. In BaseCamp, if you set the color for each Track differently and then Select them all so they are highlighted on your map, you can Print the map - adjusting it for the proper zoom level to show the Trails you want and then use the Print Preview to see if that is the type of Map you want. If your Tracks are to narrow or to fat you can adjust the width of them in the BaseCamp settings.

Thanks much guys for the responses. I was trying to do what you said, editing the tracks. I think i'm just missing something simple, Basecamp is not very
intuitive to me. Some programs, you just look at them and you know what to do, others not. Nothing to blame on the program, just my brain . If you guys have a moment, would you paste a few links to video's covering the types of things i'm trying to do.
I have bought instructional video's for some of my high
end software, video shows you things you just cant get from reading.
I bought the 180 page manual for an audio program "Reaper" that I use, that manual is great but they also had 20 or 30 short youtube video's to get you started with the basics. Those short video really help with the initial learning curve that many complex applications have. If anyone would paste links to a few basic video's on editing tracks, making routes, making custom maps to print or save as Jpegs, or other links to apps to accomplish my goaI would greatly appreciate it. I use several different programs for other editing I do , one never just does it all. Again, Thanks much for taking the time to reply !!!
