BaseCamp & Nuvi 2555 Safely Remove Hardware

Hi,
I'm using Windows XP Pro sp3 and I have BaseCamp running. When I want to remove the Nuvi from the USB port the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is not in the lower task bar.

When I plug in the Nvui I see the Blue triangle icon but if I click on it it simply disappears. Is it safe to just unplug the Nuvi at time?

Does everyone else have this issue?

I have tried ideas from the internet to get this option to show but the computer never shows the NUVI is connected when it actually is.

The computer just doesn't see the Nuvi like it does a hard drive.

The remove icon appears and allows me to remove my external hard drive from the same USB port when ever I use it.

Your help is appreciated
John

I don't have a 2555 and rarely use XP anymore, but I suspect this is related to the fact that the new 2012 Nuvi's are not setup to be USB disks. Instead, they are MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) Devices. Not sure what support XP has for this, since I think it's a relatively new thing.

However, you can alter their behavior by going into the developer menu on the Nuvi. WARNING: don't mess with this unless you think you know what you're doing. ;)

See the post about halfway down this thread: http://forums.gpsreview.net/viewtopic.php?t=21019

Make NUVI DIR & Files visible for Backup
    1. To make all of Nuvi files visible you must unhide protected files via Win7 like any other HD.
    2. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    3. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    4. The Developers Screen will pop up
    5. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    6. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    7. Shut down NUVI and hookup to Computer USB cable
    8. Start NUVI and it should recognize it is hooked up to the computer.
    9. Explorer will now see all files in ROOT directory and the .System directories.

BTW, have you backed up your Nuvi? If not, then this would be a good time to do it. Could save a lot of grief later if you have a problem

    safely remove issue

Thank you very much for the correct information to fix the issue. It makes me feel better knowing that I can now take all the precautions to prevent any damage to my Nuvi.

I'm sure this information will help many others as more of these units are being purchased.

I also did a full bckup of all the files. Previously I thought I had that done but found out I didn't have the system files backed up , now its done right.

    Thanks again
