400t - can't modify/delete waypoints on unit

I have tried to delete everything on the unit, hold top left corner and clear on boot. It has a formatted sd card with nothing on it but a garmin/gpx directory.

I add a single waypoint on the unit and connect to BaseCamp 3.2.2. I see the new waypoint along with the 3 default Garmin location waypoints.
However, if I select the new one and edit I can't change anything. i.e. If I wanted to change the symbol I can't select a new one since the arrow for the dropdown list is grayed out. Same with delete or any other edits.

I can copy them all to My Collection and edit there and then copy back and it works but I have read the Oregon allows edit directly on the unit. Firmware is latest for the 400t 4.20.

Does anyone have any idea why the unit seems to behave in "read only" mode?
Thanks

Unfortunately you need to read between the lines a bit. This feature only works with the newer Oregon models, such as the 450t. The 400t is part of the original Oregon series (I was an early adopter myself). It doesn't support editing data directly on the device, so you will need to continue doing things the way you describe.

Thanks for the info. Is the issue just that the firmware was not written to do this for the 400 series (could be enhanced) or something in the hardware doesn't support it?

I don't really know. In most cases, it's all about the firmware. And since Garmin is in the business of selling GPS'es, they are not always anxious to migrate new features to old models. To be fair, they did an exceptional job with the Oregon and kept adding new features to it for over two years - something unique across their product lines.

I got mine shortly after they were introduced, almost 4 years ago IIRC. Just last month, I gave it to a friend since I didn't use it after getting a Montana 600. :)
