BaseCamp 3.3 is here! We are starting off with an early Beta release to give everyone a chance to check out the new features and pound on it for a little bit before we release the final version.

Download it here: http://developer.garmin.com/apps/BC/BaseCamp_3.3.0.2_Beta.exe.

We have incorporated a lot of user requests from this very forum. If your desired feature/bug fix didn't make it into this release, don't hesitate to remind us.

We are very interested in your feedback, please report bugs and oddities you find, and comment on the new features.

This is the change-list from 3.2.2 to 3.3.0.2. I will add some explanations and screen-shots in later posts.

  • Added collapsible list folders and sub-lists for improved organization.
  • Added shaping point support for zumo devices like done in MapSource.
  • Added explicit support for shaping points. These will be transferred to supporting devices.
  • Added support for transfer of waypoint categories on supporting devices. These are displayed in BaseCamp as lists.
  • Added more activity profiles, with improved activity routing on supported maps.
  • Added specific avoidances for various road classes, removed the road selection slider.
  • Added custom activity profiles.
  • Added keyboard short-cuts for editing tools (divide, insert, erase).
  • Added a tools menu for easier discovery of tool keyboard shortcuts.
  • Changed to make GPX files on a memory card directly editable.
  • Changed to read all GPX files on a memory card, similar to how devices behave.
  • Improved graphing of track data.
  • Improved graphing when multiple routes or tracks are selected.
  • Improved layout of geotagged photo, waypoint, route, and track properties.
  • Added additional statistics to route and track properties.
  • Added 'Center on map' check-box on route and track dialogs.
  • Added an easier way to add waypoints to routes (Insert Waypoint button).
  • Added additional data fields to waypoints (such as address and phone number).
  • Added display and updating of date last modified for waypoints.
  • Added display of lists that contain this data item to properties.
  • Added receiving geocache visits from devices.
  • Added logging geocache visits on OpenCaching.com.
  • Added printing of geocaches.
  • Added alternate notification mechanism (less annoying pop-ups).
  • Added display settings to adjust width of routes and tracks.
  • Added support for importing waypoints and tracks from KML/KMZ files.
  • Added suggested file name when exporting (so it isn't always 'untitled').
  • Added more map details for higher detail setting.
  • Added data filters to map view.
  • Added preserving the dialog size for each data type.
  • Added option to reset track's altitude to map data.
  • Added functionality to remember display feature settings per profile.
  • Changed 'Remove List and Contents' to 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Added Shift-Delete short-cut for 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Improved printing of routes and tracks.
  • Fixed issues with sending routes to the zumo.
  • Fixed elevation profile labels for Windows XP (no longer invisible).
  • Fixed issue when duplicating a route. BaseCamp will now also duplicate the waypoints in that route.
  • Fixed issue with the data filter not being remembered between application runs.
  • Example of same route with and without total ascent displayed

The first route attached, "Retaining Wall to D939 and Road.gpx", was created with the beta and displays total ascent in the top boxes.

The second one was created with the beta by creating a track from the route and then a route from the track. The track still displayed total ascent in the top boxes.

(BTW, thank you for adding the "moving time" and "stopped time" in these boxes, I missed them much, since I could read them on my unit but then lost them when transferring to BaseCamp.)

I have a 64-bit version of Windows Vista. BaseCamp Beta Installer started and then sat for 30-minutes doing nothing. I had to terminate the app.

I installed the beta on Windows Vista 64 with no issues. Maybe try downloading again? Or perhaps an interaction with some other program on your system, like a virus checker?

Nice job with this update! I appreciate all the work the development team has done, and the way they work with forum members to resolve problems. :)

I installed the Beta on my Windows 7 machine without incident.

However, after an email from mkrouse about sending routes to the Zumo 550, there is a problem.

The first thing I noticed when I connected my Zumo, was that it doesn't appear in the left pane where the Connected Devices used to appear in the original version of BC.

But at least the first time I tried to use the Edit|Send To command, it saw both my Zumo 550 and it's card. So I sent it to All Data on the Zumo.

But there were things wrong with the route on the Zumo (missing waypoint, and also the route had straight line segments in places, instead of following the roads)

But now, in addition to the Zumo not showing up in the left pane, the Zumo is not displayed when you choose the Send To comand. Only My Collection, and it's various lists.

I hope you can suggest a solution.

    Thanks,
    Don
  • Bug : Renaming Route, New list...

When typing the name of a new list in a collection, it doesn't stay and "New list" always remains.

It is the same when renaming a route, a track etc.!

2 Problems - 1st Problem - No Devices Connected list when I attach Zumo

I am using the Beta version of BC with a Windows 7 Computer.

So this 1st problem is that the List of Connected Devices does not appear anymore when I connect my Zumo 550.

I changed out the USB cable just on the off chance that might be the problem.

But there is no Devices Connected List in the left side of the screen. I have looked to see if there is some kind of switch to turn it on. But I can't find one.

I was able to use Edit|Send To and my Zumo and the SD card both showed up the first time I wanted to send a route to the Zumo, but in subsequent attempts the Zumo and SD card did not show up in that list.

I had to close BC and then re-open it, and then the Zumo would show up in the Send To List.

But still no Devices Connected List at all. And personally I prefer to drag and drop my routes into My Data on the Zumo, not use Send To.

I hope there is a solution to this issue.

    Thanks,
    Don

2nd Problem - Totally corrupt routes on the Zumo 550

Again I'm using BC Beta on a Windows 7 machine

So once I use Send To to send my route to My Data on the Zumo, and then disconnect the Zumo and go through the regular procedure for the New Data found, the route is totally corrupt on my 550.

I have tried this with at least two of my routes, both had serious corruption.

Both routes were partially created in the latest non-Betqa version and then further work was done on each route in the Beta version. And sentto the Zumo from the Beta version.

The corruption consists of various straight line segments, and missing waypoints.

For some reason both routes showed the correct miles (or at least the same miles as the route on my computer) Neither showed the correct number of waypoints.

Again, both of these routes had been started in the original non-beta version of BC, and last riding season I had no problems whatsoever sending routes created in this version to my Zumo 550. And there was always a Devices Connected list in the left pane.

I am going to create a route totally in the Beta version, and send it to my Zumo 550 to see what happens.

    Services

In Mapsource there is a setting to choose ON/OFF/AUTO relative to displaying POI icons for services.

Where is this in BaseCamp? It would be handy if this option were to be available on the toolbar. I do realize that the "Detail Level" setting accomplish this but to a limited extent.

Thanks to the staff for making improvements in BaseCamp. Its getting better, but I still find Mapsource easier to navigate through. Although, that could be just a matter of familiarity since I've been using Mapsource for many, many years. Its unfortunate that newer GPSs are abandoning communication with Mapsource.

Again I'm using BC Beta on a Windows 7 machine

I am going to create a route totally in the Beta version, and send it to my Zumo 550 to see what happens.

So I created a route totally in the Beta version, and it had the very same corruption as the same route that was partially original BC, and partially Beta BC.

The corruption of this route seems to begin at my first via point (a shaping point created by the Insert tool)

Again, as with the other corrupt version of the route, it seems to follow the roads I have set up exactly, and the total mileage is exactly the same as what's shown in BC on my computer. However, none of the real waypoints past the first via point are shown, and neither is my end point.

My starting point is my home (dragged and dropped from My Collection), the end point is the host hotel for the OH HOG Rally near Dayton. I then selected those two points and told BC to create the route.

The waypoints in between are places I intend to stop to take ABC's of Touring photos. Mostly at points on roads that cross a county border, and a county sign can be expected. For those I used New Waypoint tool and created a waypoint, then dragged and dropped it into the place in the route I needed it to appear.

At least a couple of other waypoints are actual POI's that exist in BC. One is the Union County Courthouse, the other is the Wright Memorial National Park. I again used the New Waypoint tool to select them. In both of those cases a "1" was appended after the name, because I'm using those same POI's in another route. (I know I could have drag and dropped those from My Colletction, and probably not gotten the appended 1's) I don't know if that's part of the problem or not.

Anyway, I'm going to try the route again, without using the shaping point where the problem with the missing waypoints and endpoint seems to begin.

I know I should probably start over, (what can I say, I'm lazy) but I'm just going to delete the viapoint, then put a real waypoint there instead, and then see what happens.
  • Garmin has some hate-mail coming from me.... Apparently, the installer for this beta of BaseCamp also DELETES any installation you have of MapSource, and does so without consent or notification.

Fantastic. Great way to build customer loyalty while increasing your fanbase.

    Or not.

I have reinstalled MapSourcce and then Basecamp beta again, without similar results. I can not determine exactly why my MapSource was deleted the first time.

I am using Windows XP Media Center.

Two problems still exist with sending routes to Zumo 550

Anyway, I'm going to try the route again, without using the shaping point where the problem with the missing waypoints and endpoint seems to begin.

I know I should probably start over, (what can I say, I'm lazy) but I'm just going to delete the viapoint, then put a real waypoint there instead, and then see what happens.

To recap, this route was totally created in BC Beta. I run Windows 7 on my computer

Well I deleted the via point. And put in a Waypoint using the New Waypoint tool.

I still have the two problems. The first is the Zumo does not create the Connected Devices on the left pane. That can be worked around by using the Send To command. However, that can only be used once, and then the Zumo 550 does not show up in the list of places available to send the route to. I have to close, and restart BC. Then Send To again shows the Zumo.

The second problem also still exists. Not one of the Waypoints shows up as a flag on the Route on the Zumo, nor does the Endpoint.

The route follows the roads exactly as created in BC, and passes the exact spots where the Waypoints show as flags in BC. But there are no flags on the Zumo route.

I am at a loss as to what to do next.
